Pleasantly surprised by Seiko 5 Sports

On a whim, I bought a Seiko 5 Sports SRPD51 last weekend. Maybe it’s because I went in with low expectations, but I’m really pleased with it so far. I know push-pull crown and Hardlex crystal feel like Seiko cheaped out, but when I compare the case finish and dial execution of the Seiko 5 to my Kamasu, the Seiko really does come out on top. I personally prefer the 5’s bezel action over the Orient’s, which is too stiff. Even the bracelet really wasn’t that bad, though I quickly put the watch on a NATO.

To me, there’s something just a bit more lovable and charming about the Seiko 5 than other dive style watches in the price category. If you’re on the fence, check one out.

Thanks! Crown & Buckle Matte Supreme Greige. Super comfy.

I have a Srpd71 and agree fully. It’s a great watch for the price. I did ended up swapping in an AR sapphire crystal. I’ve done that to both of my Seiko 5s and it really makes a difference.

I got mine for USD$200 and have been wearing it daily for about a month. Hard to judge it as an experienced collector because it was the first thing I bought in this price range, but I feel like there's something quintessential about it. Accuracy has been really great too (less than 2 spd as long as it's worn). Honestly the only downside is that now I don't really want to buy another automatic dive-y-looking watch ever.

One pet peeve: I happen to usually be awake and dressed between 10pm and 2am, so the 4-hour date change is a bit annoying. No idea if $900 watches do this any better.

I miss my SRPD, but it was just too big and heavy for me. However, now that Seiko has finally announced a 38mm version I'm just waiting for more colour options.
