Cheap purchase to try-out - do you do this?

Just a short post out of curiosity. I sometimes buy a cheap watch on for instance Aliexpress to try out a certain style of watch before actually buying the "real thing".

For example the small diameter tendency and that 39mm would be the ideal size, etc etc. I purchased a 39mm Benyar lookalike to a famous watch and combined it with the purchase of a cheap FKM rubber strap, another trend. I must say I like it and doubt if I need anything else 😅😅

Do you guys also do this or you just go for the big purchase in one go and trust Youtube watch reviews?

Just go for the biggie myself as otherwise it's just diverting funds.

Yeah… when I don’t want to spend too much money I’ll scratch the itch like I just did, I got myself a Pagani Tudor Chrono homage… but sizing wise you can’t compare it with the real thing though… example for me the Tudor is much heavier and chunkier than the Pagani, I knew it cuz I wore one but for me I just liked the look than the wear of the watch… I also tried building a 36mm watch to try out and that was good and I’m no longer stand off ish if the watch I like is a 36 mm so for that it kinda works… but the real thing does matter in wear because of the materials used…

There’s been a few posts about this recently. I’m an advocate of this personally. I don’t live too far from London, but I can’t be bothered to visit, get mugged- physically & emotionally, then deal with the usual AD bullshit. If I like the homages style I just order the real thing & use the homage as target practice. My last, a faux Panerai, took a 223 at 600 yards. Double win 😂

I've tried it with the PD Daytona, it taught me that screwdown pushers are a joke. But it also gave me time on the wrist to see if I'd get bored of it. I'm happy "diverting funds" of <£50 to see if a £13k watch is a wearable option.

I bought cheap parts, dials, hands and straps to try out different combinations of styles and colors on my watches before committing to nicer materials. A big part of the watch journey is experimenting and figuring out your tastes and I'd rather do that at a lower cost rather than making expensive mistakes.

I agree … also as we get into this hobby even deeper our taste will vary and change as well 🍻

I have purchased both bronze and titanium Tandorio watches to see if I like the metals before investing more. Each was less than $100, which is inexpensive for those metals.

Haha, well done!

This is actually an good demo when it comes to the diameter and lug to lug and etc. . But you always have to keep in mind that these watches are much lighter and thicker than the original ones most of the time. But beside that it’s a really good idea.
