ANYONE INTERESTED IN A SF MEETUP?

This is me pretending like I'm on the fence about attending the 2024 San Francisco Windup Watch Fair being held May 3-5 at a new venue, the Gateway Pavillion at Fort Mason.

IMO the event had badly outgrown the previous location and was too close to some of the most unpleasant realities of SF street life. Depending on where one was lodged the walk to and from the event could be unsafe and dystopian.

Windup SF had become so well attended the last two years that the opportunity to engage others and handle watches had been seriously degraded. Many of the same awesome makers and enthusiasts however are returning this year so the change in venue feels like a fresh opportunity.

The Fort Mason area is a lovely destination with walking paths, great views and is surrounded by many iconic SF activities.

The area hosts nautical exhibits...

And even a vintage arcade for gaming geeks (me!)...

There are many food, local and tourist attractions nearby including Ghirardelli Square. To be clear there is much I appreciate about San Francisco and it's wonderful lodging opportunities. Not bagging on SF but wanting to keep it real concerning my first hand experiences at Windup the last two years.

I'm wondering if there is enough interest and available time to organize a WatchCrunch meetup?

If the interest is substantial enough to proceed perhaps someone familiar with the area around the Gateway Pavillion can help organize though I'm willing to pitch in. I've hosted other WC meetups from afar but having a local to assist is often priceless.

Please comment on whether you are interested in a SF meetup as well as preferences for times and locations. If we move forward I'll post under the Meetup tab and make the gathering official.

If you are a watchmaker wanting to meet with dedicated enthusiasts who as a group spends way too much money on booze and watches feel free to chime in and join us.

Looking forward to seeing how this plays out!

I’m definitely in. This would be my first WC meet. I’m flying from Dubai to be in the city for a conference the same days. So I will definitely be interested if this is finalized.

I'm not sure what day or days but I'm in. SF is still a great place although you need to be a little more aware about where you're at and don't forget the golden rule "don't to engage the trolls". I'll see you there Jack.

My social anxiety would be too much.

I am going to be there at the time though. Will probably hear you guys talking and hide in the bushes.

Whoohoo! I've committed to the 2024 Windup Watch Fair in San Francisco.

I'm booked at The Donatello for Thursday May 2nd, departing Sunday evening May 5th.

The Donatello is a great property with a rooftop bar as well as many other comfortable spots that may be great for hosting a WC gathering.

If Crunchers prefer somewhere closer to Fisherman's Wharf I'm also open to suggestions.

Depending on feedback I can host a WC gathering for Friday evening (the 3rd) at the Donatello on the rooftop bar or somewhere warmer at one of the other bars in the hotel.

Looking forward to input from other Crunchers attending Windup and looking forward to seeing you all there!
