W&W 2024: Fieldwalker's late night musings ๐Ÿ™‚

NO, I'm not there. Just bathing in the excessive media coverage on a quiet night shift at work.

With so many new releases all at once, it feels a bit glutinous to look them over at once, but I'm zealously doing it anyway.

Wouldn't it be amazing to be there in person?

Or.. would it be a weird form of torture seeing so much Unobtainium behind glass, feeling sort of excited, and then never ever being able to try on or see in real life (anyone still waiting on a Ti Yachtmaster?).

I'm mulling over trying to get there next year. Will wait to hear some reports from this year ( @TheHoroSexual ) before getting too serious. If a few of us attended, roving about as small group might be more fun.

GS fanboy me: I'm smitten for the 9SA4 (dress watch aficionado me). Love the Bright Ti case as well, but will wait for a more colorful dial to be released I think. Reserve judgement until seen the new Birch IRL. but 9SA4 ..vavoom!๐Ÿฅฐ

Image

Speaking of color - how about that red/orange of that (Godzilla 2.0) Hotaka Sunset GMT/Chrono? I think I like it for its craziness?..

Image

But the watch in general, well there's lot going on.

Image

At least it's grade 5 Ti, and I dig bright colors. Also curious to see the 'color change' in person. But - Iโ€™m not a GMT guy OR a chrono guy, so definitely not a watch Iโ€™d buy.

Genbi Valley and Starry Night also both cool, I love new dial patterns. Looks great in pics but also waiting to see in person. Happily with GSs, seeing IRL is generally possible (I've even tried on a Kodo before!๐Ÿ˜ฒ! ). I'll visit Genbi valley, Ryusendo caves, and my buddies at Shizukuishi this summer. So expect a report about if the GS dials align with what I see. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Re, the 800lb Gorilla: more gold and more platinum is just Rolex living it's best life. The 18mm thick, heavier than a boat anchor, Golden Deepsea is hilarious.. but maybe an ultimate 'eff you' sort of watch? I'm sure demand will exceed supply for this one.

Image

I'd love to try one on for the comedy of seeing it on my 15cm (and soon to be fractured if I kept wearing it) wrist.

A general W&W 2024 trend: many companies baring it all with huge caseback display windows.

The GS 9SA4 in the first pic being another example of the breed.

Image

The Monaco gets an entire sapphire caseback

Image

Rolex, not known for aesthetic movements, gets a beautiful one and a huge window to gaze at it through

Image

The IWC has a full 'glassbox' sapphire on the movement side as well as the front side.

Image

I guess nobody is really inscribing casebacks much anymore and if you've got a pretty movement may as well show it off?

Welcome your thoughts on the show and it's releases so far.

  • Seeing anything in the 'must buy, will buy, I'm contacting my AD as I type this' category?

  • Have you noticed some watch that's crazy cool, that we should all be made aware of?

  • If you're attending in the public days what are you most looking forward to?

  • Educate us on the watches you are impressed by!

I'd say Tudor is definitely filling the role of actual tool watch vs older brother Rolex. Out of all the higher end brands, Tudor would be what I actually pay for.

Do wish more would start playing with Grade 5, GS seems to be the only one doing so for the most part.

Tudor, with the almost a Milsub Black Bay Monochrome, would be my vote for best.

For me, I like it, cringe-y commercial aside. I will be honest tho, was kinda hoping for a 39mm FXD.

No must buys from me, seeing as the current trend is to make everything more bling. And tbh I like a solid caseback. So I'll patiently wait for a good deal on a used Tudor.

As always I admire the fancier variants from afar, gorgeous watches, just wouldn't be practical for daily wear at this point.

Dude, if you go to W&W, let me know. I may join you!!!
