A More Perfect Machine

Question for all my fellow Watch Crunchers: When you hack/set your mechanical or automatic watch, do you expect the minute hand to line up perfectly at each indices afterward?

I might be a little OCD but I definitely expect the minute hand to line up. And It really bothers me when it doesn’t. As a result, I find myself resetting the time throughout the day trying to get it all perfectly lined up.

I’ve read up on this a little and saw others recommend to wind the minute hand past the indices and then slowly wind it back when setting the time. Apparently, this helps with building up the tension in the hands. This seems to work on some watches, but not all. Honestly, I find myself reaching for those “more perfect” watches with greater frequency as a result.

Do I just have unrealistic expectations? Should I just accept the inherent flaws of an imperfect machine? Or should I just have my local watchmaker on speed dial?!

Or should I schedule an appointment with my therapist?

I always do this also. Glad I'm not the only one.

Yup, but we all are the same.

Strength in numbers!

The only time I've ever had this problem was when I didn't notice that I lined the minute hand a bit off by not looking closely enough. If it's "off " by 15 seconds I don't care, as long as it's consistent.

It's not like I whip out a loupe every time I check the time.

I get it close, but I've let that dream go a long time ago. See a therapist lol. I'm all seriousness with some movements I find I get it perfect, but the minute hand moves as soon as I push on the crown. Sucks but I've learned to deal with it

It's going to be inaccurate anyway after a couple of days so it doesn't bother me. For accuracy, quartz or phone.

Not if you set it every morning 👍

When the date changes and/or I need to readjust the time I always try to hit dead centre alignment. Later on I don't care anymore, otherwise you are stuck in silly routine of adjusting it daily.

Swiss or german watches (rolex, iwc,ap,patek,a lange, jaeger) good quality japanese (seiko, casio) should line up .. it would be a shame if they dont. Cheap chinese knockoffs or microbrands and fashion watches based thereon, well dont expect too much...
