What a Fake!

Back in August 2001, My new employer sent my fellow new-hires and me out to Long Island for two weeks of training. It was so mind numbing…that along with the prodigious amounts of booze they provided us…it probably reduced my brain cell count by 1/3 to this day.

Nights and weekends we escaped from the Marriott Courtyard where we were holed-up…and into the City for shenanigans befitting the young and inebriated crowd we were.

While waiting for the ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty the first Saturday, I was approached by a ‘young entrepreneur’ selling his wares. After some haggling, he offered me this caffeine-free diet Coke of fakes for about 80 bucks. It was wrapped-up all official and looked nice to me. So all of my uncaring and selfish youth bubbled to the surface and I bought it.

Its 22 jewel movement (that’s stamped ‘China 22 jewels’ on the rotor) stopped keeping proper time after about a year. But by then I didn’t want to be seen wearing it because it’s (you know) fake. Unsavory in my opinion.

It’s been sitting at the back of my watch drawer for years. I thought I would bring it out to look at it today and realized that if I ever did get a real one of these very famous watches, it wouldn’t be this model. To me it’s uninspiring at best. It really demonstrates to me how personal one’s taste is with watches…and how we should all be freely allowed to enjoy what we like…so long as it’s not something dubious and potentially counterfeit.

Do you own a watch you don’t wear because it’s fake or goes against proper convention or your better judgement?

No fakes. I try to wear all my watches, even a couple that I have no idea what possessed me to buy them. ( a Skagen and a butt ugly Timex from years ago)

Now that you've rediscoverd that Fake you might consider taking a hammer to it.

Well said. Yeah, it’s got no soul for sure.

The very first watch I started learning modding on has a fake dial. I wasn't ready to spend more than the cost of the full build on an OEM one, knowing I would probably scratch it horribly as it was my first attempt at installing hands.

The dial is well made but knowing it's not original takes away from the enjoyment of wearing the watch. I've been on the lookout for an OEM version or NOS lookalike to upgrade the build but haven't found a matching dial so far. For this reason I have been neglecting the watch for some time, even though it's a great conversation starter since I assembled it.

Yes, it was a gift from my dad that I can only bring out in August. I'll post it in August and explain more.

I bought a “Rolex” in Times Square years ago just to see how low I could haggle. It was either $15 or $20. The crown fell off and I eventually threw it out. Probably worth $5.

One day I'll get a fake! I currently have none as I'm on a buying hiatus and I'm not cool enough to know where to get one.

I have a fake Seiko that I inherited from my grandpa. I think it’s hilarious. It looks like a copy of a Mido commander, but with a missing date window, and a Seiko logo. I don’t know what the story was behind it. He had a some nice real watches, including a 70’s Omega with a TV dial (I also inherited this one!). I’m guessing either he found it at a swap meet or someone gave it to him. I would never buy a fake watch, but I keep this one around for sentimental reasons.
