Look Closely…it’s a Crack!

I opened my watch case last night only to discover my new Koa Wood watch’s crystal is cracked!

At first, I thought it was a glare, but soon noticed the clean vertical break the length of the dial.

My memory may not be as good as it once was…but I can’t remember one instance I may have bumped the watch against an object.

I e-mailed Treehut to see what they can do and am awaiting a response. If need-be I have a clockmaker who can repair it.

This watch has a lot of value because my son got it for me for Christmas…so I am brutally-upset and disturbed by its phantom occurrence. In all the years I have collected watches, this is the first watch to have a crystal crack.

Have you ever had a phantom crack occur out of nowhere and have no idea how it happened? Tell us about it.

Sorry to hear that. Very bizarre. Let me know how they handle it because I have a TreeHut too that was gifted to me as well that means a ton.

Makes sense… wood expands and contracts with moisture levels. My guess is the wood swelled a fraction of a millimeter and the crystal had nowhere to go.

I’d think a slightly thicker sapphire would do better at pushing back against the wood, or possibly an acrylic that has some flex in it to compensate.

I will indeed.

That’s a good idea. I live in a dry climate, however, and have worn the watch only occasionally since receiving it for Christmas. But yeah…just such a grinding mystery.

Moisture is an enemy for all watches. Wood would certainly have expansion and contraction issues. When you get it repaired I would recommend dehumidifier packets in your watch box.

Cheers!

Sorry to hear, that's a bit of a weird one, hopefully you can get it taken care of without much hassle.

I've never had a phantom crack occur like that, just cracks that I'm very aware of.

Hope Treehut replaces it. If not, yep, get a watchmaker to replace it. It will surely only take less than 30 minutes.
