New $35 Casio - a "shit GBX100" alternative

The Casio MWD - which I can only assume stands for "Mepon of Was Destruction" - is a new beater from Casio with a steel bezel very similar to the fan-favorite GBX-100 (which costs well over three times as much, even when it's on sale).

Unfortunately, unlike the very popular GBD-200, both of these models seriously lack a nice selection of colors.

Here for example we can see the GBD-200 in its most popular variant, the "discharge green" version.

One Amazon reviewer described the color choices of the new MWD-110 as "fucking shit ass motherfucking tits bullshit".

I have personally checked Casio's website and it seems that his description of the situation is pretty accurate.

Another Amazon reviewer says "This watch is just a shit GBX100! - I'd fuck my own grandma before wearing this piece of dog shit!".

He goes on to write "I'm returning this sack of cum to Amazon and I'm never using this website again!".

The MWD-110 does come in both positive and negative display options, which is good I suppose, because the negative display just doesn't integrate well into its case in my opinion.

And I say this as someone who normally loves negative displays.

Notably, the new MWD does not feature any sports-specific features like its older bothers, but more of a standard Casio selection of timers and alarms.

Most importantly, I don't think it can show the time while using other timing modes - which for me is an absolute must, not only for the convenience, but also because the new higher resolution displays have a very different layout for every mode which prevents confusion between modes.

For example here is the GBD200 in its countdown timer mode. Notice how the entire screen layout is completely different from how the watch looks in the photo above, and how the local time is still displayed at the bottom.

In comparison the old style of display like the one found on the MWD looks roughly the same at a glance no matter what mode you're in - which has caused me to misread the time on several occasions in the past (while using similar watches).

This same benefit can be had with any analog-digital watch - as that naturally always shows the time no matter what is displayed on the screen.

Regardless of the fake Amazon reviews that I invented, I must say that I think this watch is a neat little addition to Casio's already unbelievably massive watch selection. (Fun fact, did you know that if you type in almost any small number into Google you'll find Casio watches with that number in the model name?)

Isn't the GBX discontinued? Too bad... I really enjoyed the steel bezel look 🤩

I think just the pond-color one.

Hmmmm... They have been out of stock in all for Norway for over a year now, all colors 🤔 I don't get it

I think the new MWD-110 makes more sense for 95% of watch buyers than the GBX-100. Most people use their watch for just telling the time, the additional functions are mostly unused unless playing around for the sake of playing around.

For the few people who use the additional functions spending more for the GBX-100 makes sense, but spending more for features you don't need/use is just buying buying specs to say you jave specs.

I use the additional features all the time. Timers for cooking and for work and daily alarms and even the step tracker etc.

But at the end of the day the look and feel is the most important to most people I think.

and my 200 has a great soft strap compared to the hard plastic on most cheap casios.

I'm not sure. It's possible it just doesn't sell well in that region or some other reason.

In your case the more expensive option makes a lot of sense, you use the functions.

I have an Echo in my kitchen that does 90% of the timing, the other 10% being the bezel on a dive watch.

I agree 100% on look/feel, and to my eye the $46 MWD-110 looks almost as good as the more expensive GBX-100. I actually find the resin strap on my $75 Timex Atlantis more comfortable than the strap on my $200 GA-B2100.
