Baltic MR01 in WoS*

Do you like the Baltic MR-01 but missed out on the latest pre-order?

Do you live in either Singapore, Malaysia or New Zealand?

Are you near a Watches of Switzerland in that country?

If you answer yes to all the above, then you can walk in and buy one (be quick though, they’re limited to 300 in each dial colour).

What’s interesting here, is that microbrands are now making their way into the displays of watch retailers. Many of these have employed a ‘direct to customer’ route which made them more engaging but also restricted potential customers the chance to try on the watches. Unless you were lucky to attend a meetup/trade show where these brands exhibited, it was difficult to see one in person.

Will moving into the ‘retail-sphere’ make these brands lose a little of that ‘magic’ of being a niche company and turn them into more of a corporate machine?

It makes sense for Baltic to produce a limited run in this instance, especially since the popularity of the MR01 has meant that particular model has been subjected to limited order periods on their own website.

I bought this one. They put the same movement in a bigger case (39mm?). The Baltic’s proportions feel better imo

Looks pretty decent 🙂 I would argue that not everything is about movement in watchmaking, especially at a "similar" price point (I don't talk about an ETA 7750 in a $15K watch even though that could even be defendable in some aspects).

Here I personnaly prefer Baltic proposition, in design, refinement and finishing (from what we can see on the picture) :)

The lost bit of 'magic' is dwarfed by the fact you can actually go and try on the watch. I think we've all bought something online and the product hasn't quite lived up to expectations. And the magic is back when you walk in store and find something unusual and unexpected, so credit to them. Makes me wonder about pricing n profit margins though as a 3rd party will take a cut now.

I think you’re right. Being ‘limited’ would give WoS/Baltic to add a slight premium on the price (I don’t know for sure) but going forward having microbrands in stores, could be treated as a way to hook people with (generally) lower prices before selling them more ‘expensive’ stuff later.

It is funny how they’re called Watches of Switzerland and they sell Grand Seiko (Japan) and now Baltic (France)….🤔

A gateway brand, and while they are in there they are seeing the 'good' stuff. Nothing wrong in a diverse portfolio in a retail outlet generates footfall and hopefully sales which is good all round. Great bit of digging to get the info for us.
