Tons of threads on this... they usually turn into flame wars.

My opinion (and I am in the minority)

This is fine:

And this is theft:

Nothing wrong with a low-cost Chinese watch. You can find really good value from them. But not a fan of ripping off someone else's design. I mean if you take massive inspiration, fine. However, if any deviation from the original is a mistake, and not by design, I don't want to have anything to do with it. There are so many nice watches at any price point, that don't steal from others. No reason to support a company that does.

Have no problem with them at all, if you look round so many are homages of something else in some way

Wow it must be at least 2 weeks since our last thread on this. But, because I'm dying to see the inevitable "flame war" as Jeremy put it, I'll give my opinion.

Have at it. As long as you're putting your own name on the dial go for it. I like a good clomage if it's good quality for the price I pay

Can't believe 2 weeks have passed already!

I wish some of the Chinese brands would do some original designs.  Many of the watches are reasonable quality and a good value for the low prices. I do have a Seagull that I like and wear often.

just say NO

I think they're okay. I have a Pagani Seamaster "Commander" homage. It's some Bond homage. My thing is, I like the style of the Omega Seamaster, but I don't have $8,000 sitting in the bank that I can blow on an expensive watch. So for $130, I got a Seiko movement in a Seamaster homage. Other than the fact that it's more than likely made with Chinese slave labor, which really does suck, it's a very good watch.

I think it is kind o the wrong question, because when it comes down to it, they (Pagani and the others) make complete clones, completely original watches, and anything in between.

This one, for example is in-between. It kind of has an IWC portugueser look, except those have all subdials afaik. It's pretty close to a generic watch look anyway, with some vintage style elements several companies have used in the past and present.

So, you should more look at it like this: value these brands for their product: how good (and honest) are the specs, how good is the QC, how well turn these watches out in real life? When it then comes to the thorny question of how original these watches are (and how original you want them to be) you go watch by watch.

I have no first-hand experience with Paganis, but from numerous reviews and reports from other people I am pretty sure that - as a watch company - they produce well-specced watches of decent quality for the prices they charge. So, they are not in the space of the Filippo Lorettis of this world.

Don’t mind homages of the unavailable and unobtainable. It’s pretty stinky to make clones (in the guise of ‘homage’) of something that’s in current production. Speaking of… Where did all the good Panerai homages go!? 😂

The Chinese are master copy cats when it comes to watches any thing designer wear. They don't care nobody is gonna stop them and they will keep doing what they do best. They always make money out of it. I'm not surprised they made pretty good knock off watches out there. I don't favor them on this. Its up to us to make the choice that we decide to buy.
