About to pull the trigger on a new Zenith Pilot, but is it reasonable?

Hello watchcrunch friends,

I'm about to add another piece to my collection with this Zenith. Getting it with a good discount from AD.

Do you feel anxiety from purchasing a new watch sometimes? If so do you typically feel better after the purchase?

I like the watch a lot and think I'm getting it at a good price from an AD I can build a good relationship with.

I'm just like: another watch? Am I being unreasonable or is it just me living my life and treating myself?

I am not overextending myself financially but it's my 2nd watch this year (3rd if I count a gift).

Just wondering if this is right lol.

I always second guess. There are so many options. Only issue with Zenith is a poor reputation for service. I love their watches, however. I do have an el primiero.

It's a gorgeous watch, but my advance is always "sleep on it." It's a big decision and take your time!

Nice. I guess service isn't something I am too worried about. More on the principle of buying another watch.

I have 4 rolexes and one panerai. I love my rolexes but I would really like to have more variety and something more neutral which I think this Zenith does very well. I don't have a pilot watch and this is a good looking high horology version at a good price.

Also I only share 1 car with my wife so I feel like I'm not throwing money out the window either but still can't help thinking: is it reasonable lol.

But then I'm like "why the hell do I work so hard if I'm not doing this ? What's the point?".

Agree it’s A good pilot watch. Good luck. What about IWC?

I tried them but I don't like them much except the top gun versions which are priced same as this one but significantly less interesting from a movement standpoint. They look good but don't feel like worth that price.

I really like the design of the iwc top gun. But it looks like a watch that should be half the price to me. Kind of looks plasticky.

The Zenith looks and feels like a solid high horology piece.

Have you sold a tag heuer on Chrono24 recently lol? Weird question but whatever

·

1 watch is too much! If it doesn’t impact you financially, then have at it!

Great watch!!!

·

You could do a lot worse than two in a year! If it's no strain, enjoy yourself!

·

Asking watch collecting addicts if it’s ok to buy your 2nd or 3rd watch in a year, seems likely to be unbiased, safe and predictable 😂

·

It’s a very good looking watch but a bit overpriced to my eyes. Have you considered the Mark XX?

·
·

The transition between the railway around the dial and the dial seems extremely cheaply designed. Overall it's a "meh" for me

I am always so floored when people in the business of selling luxury timepieces do not know the etiquette of handeling watches. If a sales rep in my boutique layed a watch onto its bracelet like your GMT rather than the Side of its case I would have to have a discussion with them… other than that I do love this zenith! 3 watches is not too crazy in one year. Plus! It’s almost the holidays. Treat yourself!

I was in a Tag boutique, and they kept placing the watch down on the bracelet and I kept picking it up, and putting it on the side. At some point she looked at me weird; I then explained why it should be on the side. lol.

  1. It's a really nice watch. Lumed Arabics, El Primero and 36000 VpH 😍

  2. Could you compromise and buy pre-owned. Saving a couple of $k... ?

This is not the type of watch I would be ok buying pre-owned due to two things:

1- The strap is a textile - I don't want someone else to have worn it

2- I love the display caseback and once you buy preowned that caseback is usually already a bit altered so that would remove a lot of the joy

Also I checked pre-owned for this model and they are more than I'm getting here lol.

I have been thinking about this Zenith along with a few other choices all from the same ad, your post has given me pause, slight hesitation since I do not expect a good discount probably less than 15% not to boast but I am a good customer, not same as guys who buy Journe, Moser and Ferrier but ad/owner can count on me during slow times. Do not need another watch that is without question but unless the Mrs allows me another renovation on our hovel, it appears that I will add another Zenith unless I get sidetracked by something from Grand Seiko again.

·

I had bought a panerai from an AD who does zenith too in August. They could only do $6600 on the zenith + tax.

This AD is giving me $6200 including tax without any prior history with them..

·

My recent Zenith service experience would mitigate against this but if it fits your wrist and you like it go for it.

If it doesn't hurt financially, and it balances with getting wrist time along with your other watches (as opposed to relegating a watch to a watch box) then go for it!

It seems there are roughly three different camps in watch enthusiasts, at least from what I read here in watch crunch and elsewhere. Those that stick strictly to a small collection of no more than 4-5 watches or less. Those that have 6 to 14 and have a "one in, one out" rule to keep things balanced. And those that collect for collecting sake and don't mind if 20 watches (or more) stay in a box(es) most of the time.

The perils of well made inexpensive watches are real man!

I like to imagine I'll be in the first group someday, lol. But the reality is that I'm in the 2nd group struggling not to be in the 3rd group and having to justify my "hobby" to my partner when we have so much expensive sh%t to do around our house.

Sound like you are in the enviable (to me) first group at the moment. Hope you can stay there lol!

And lastly I love that Zenith, great looking watch that seems like it would do really well with different straps!

Thank you!

I'll be honest I have a tough job. I can keep doing it for the money but I need a way to keep motivating myself and watches are pretty much the only way because I don't care for cars and I don't care for a big house. I'm still saving a good amount despite this potential purchase.

And I have investments that will only do well if things crash. So I'm like, might as well put some of the.money in watches since if things don't crash my watches will retain solid value, if they crumble due to the economy it means my investments are doing great lol

So in a way I create a positive spin on either scenario lol

Do it....🤣

Don’t buy more watches.

Quit your job.

If it adds something not already in your collection, buy it. If it duplicates complications you already have, skip it! Simple: do not hoard*! 😜 You can only wear one watch at a time. 🤷🏽‍♂️🤓

*"I am referring to personal experience."

·

Can't say about that feeling but that Pilot looks great on gour wrist for sure

I did it!

You were right, it's even better with a $10 strap! Lol!

I almost always feel a little anxious when I purchase watches. Generally it’s because I realize with each purchase, I don’t need to buy any more for the year. Yet I also know I will anyway.

But, like you, I fell head first into the zenith pilot watch in stainless steel. I bought it this past week and I’m glad I did. It’s such a quality piece and a great addition to my growing collection of Aviator Watches.

Give yourself some breathing room and walk out of the store without buying. You’ll be glad you slept on it and waited 24 hours. That way, if you realize you shouldn’t have bought it, you’ll be relieved. Or, on the flip side, you’ll simply be happy when you go back the next day to purchase it.

I have one in ceramic and I love it, great piece.

planning to get one! How's the ceramic holding so far?

Nary a scratch to be seen anywhere, couldn't be happier.
