Exploring a New Way to Organize the Collection/Wish List

If you're a visual person like me, spreadsheets are far from the best way to organize the current collection or plan a future wish list. I need to see the watches, to imagine how they'd look both in the watch box and on the wrist.

A few weeks ago, I was doing some research on project/task management software and ended up putting together a bit of a watch collection/wish list/mood board of sorts in Trello. I'm still scratching the surface of what it can do, but at a very basic level, you build a Trello board with "Cards."

I created a "Card" for each watch, which is then categorized into one of a few grouped columns, or "Lists." To start with, I've split things up into Casual, Sports, Chronographs, Dress, and "Wifey." I'm single, but it's never too early to brainstorm potential gifts for a significant other. And having a smaller sized wrist, we'll be able to share everything. Win win in my book.

Watches with a blue label are ones I currently own, the rest are on the Wish List. This screenshot doesn't show how far down these columns go! The current collection is small, but the Wish List is pretty darn long.

If I click on one of the "Cards" I have access to a detailed description and any other pictures I've added as attachments. I'd like to add things like case dimensions, power reserve, and other relevant specifications to the description. Maybe some poetic copy explaining why that particular watch is of interest to me. Since the cover picture is always a simple head-on shot with a white background, these extra pictures are usually made up of wrist shots, movement shots, etc. and provide more context.

Laying things out in a visual, easy-to-navigate platform like Trello helped me notice a few patterns. For example, a significant number of my current and future watches have white/silvery dials. Not that that's a bad thing, but it does make me stop and wonder, "How different is X watch (with yet another white/silvery dial) from the others I already own?" I don't collect to check certain boxes, but I would like the collection to be somewhat well-rounded.

I'm still developing this system, but so far it's helped me visualize things in a much easier way. If any of you have experience with Trello, are eager to provide constructive feedback, or would like to share how you organize your current collection/future Wish List, I'm all ears. This is such an amazing idea. I’ve been looking for a way to organize my watch collection visually. But just could not find anything that felt right. I am going to try this asap!

I used Trello for work a few years ago and it's potential was amazing. We just didn't have the resources to keep our ever changing cards up to date.

Thanks for the reminder.

I'm glad the post was helpful/inspiring! Like you, I wasn't really happy with any of the solutions I tried until I found this. I think there's a way to link to a Trello "Board." Could be a fun way of sharing our collections here on WC since there isn't really a feature for that. I tend to just scroll through peoples' #WRUW entries.

I think it’s an amazing idea and will be widely popular. Let me know when it’s ready

If you end up using it again for watch-related content, consider posting a link to it! Maybe that could be a cool way for us to succinctly share our collections and wish lists.

I think I managed to find a way to make it publicly viewable, with no need to sign up for a Trello account yourself: https://trello.com/b/iYSlcYf8/watch-collection-wish-list

We used Trello a few years ago but I really can't remember anything about it - which made me wonder how much software I've used in the past that I've forgotten about. Anyway, I like this idea as I have a large wishlist and it would be great to have it better organised. 👍

Sounds like a great organisational idea, everyone needs order in their lives!
