Just a (JDM) Seiko Presage to Grand Seiko Event???

I have been fortunate enough to be good friends with a someone who is very connected in his professional life and who is also a watch "guy" like us.  He was able to secure a seat at a private event that is being sponsored by Grand Seiko and got one for me too. I don't have a GS, but I do have a Seiko Presage SARX 055 (sometimes referred to as the baby Snowflake, but see the SJE073 which is probably a better comparison - I digress).

I love my Presage and I wear it often. I am a big GS fan and one could very well be my next acquisition; I was just at a boutique a couple of weekends ago checking out a few watches. I am waiting on a Datejust to become available to make my final decision between the two.

I would like to wear my Seiko Presage to the event as it's in the family, but am wondering if I should wear something more "upscale." My question: Am I wrong to question whether I should wear my "just a Seiko" to an upscale GS event? I feel as though the obvious answer is "no, it's fine" but is it?

Dude, come on!  People are gonna love your SARX055!!!  It's a true enthusiast's watch.  You see one of those on someone's wrist, and this is always the reaction (from the famous scene in "Silicon Valley" when Russ Hanneman meets Jared):

I love this comment, as someone who could not yet afford the GS and also owns another "Baby GS" SARB033, I sometimes feel the imposter syndrome playing. I went to a Seiko x GS boutique and got good encouraged by the kind compliments from the GS sales for wearing the SARB033.

The SARX055 and  SARB033 are both amazing watches by themselves without needing the comparison with GS. Be proud of it and wear it, in the end you buy watches for yourself :)

Like they said... own it, love it, rock it 🤘

My Prospex Ginza is my pretend GS!  🤪

Dial detail and texture is the bomb, so maybe in that one way it’s pretty close.   It’ll have to suffice till finances and stars align for getting the real deal.
Well done scoring an invite to the event, should be fun!

Great story. Not surprised by the SARB-love, it's awesome. You're completely right 👍. Thank you!

I've brought some of my close friends to Grand Seiko events before (and convincing them to "like" watches as well haha) and they don't even wear a watch 🙄
Everyone in the event was like on formal attire, and there's me on fashion street clothes 😂

I guess the best answer is wear what you want to wear on the day haha. On that note, the Seiko Presage SARX055 does look cool tho.

Don't listen to these people! Buy another piece and send the SARX055 to me!

Dude!  I am seriously jealous.  That is no pretend GS.  I tried to get my hands on one, but like IMMEDIATELY after the watch was released, every frickin' one was sold out!!!

Hey dude, by the way, I'm guessing based on the fact that you're in Ft. Lauderdale that you're going to the GS Miami event?  I was gonna go, but couldn't convince my wife to take a flight across the country just to look at watches!  Ha!

The manager of the GS Miami Boutique is a dude named Joel.  He's the most down-to-earth, easy-going, likable guy in the world.  We often text message back and forth, and call each other "dude" and "bro" in all our messages.  Forget all the formal, hoity-toity whatever.

In my day job, I work with CEOs and executives at Fortune 500 companies as a "very serious person."  But, early on, what I discovered is that under whatever exterior, deep down inside, EVERYONE appreciates fart jokes just as much as any 6 year-old.

Thanks, yes, I think I met him briefly a couple of weeks ago at the boutique in midtown.  Very nice guy, but the store was busy and he was being pulled in various directions. He was trying to give everyone his attention - completely understandable. Particularly since he was handing out $6-9K watches like candy.  This is a dinner that is hosted by GS with a local law firm - not sure how that works. What is the GS Miami Event and when is it?

The Boutique is having a dinner on 4/28.  You know, "Hello, sir, here is the new SBGD209, for only $250k.  Would you like a refill on the blood of a virgin, and another endangered rhino sandwich?"

Used my J- connection : got my mother in law to drive to the nearby Osaka Seiko headquarters and pick one up!  😁

Okay, okay, okay...  I  got an idea...  the next time they release something amazing like the SPB259, have your mother-in-law pick one up for me too!!!

“Just a Seiko“ could be more than enough 👌🏻
