Panerai purchase recommendations

Hi guys,

Panerai has never been on my list but I saw that model popping up and I’ve been torn apart. It looks really beautiful and elegant. Not that typical “in your face” Panerai.

So I’m asking the community today if I could get a simple introduction to the world of Panerai and maybe go through the different families they offer to guide me understand what really is a Panerai.

Would much appreciate also a few model recommendations. The secondary market looks to be either it’s “cheap” or above 10k (so it must be good, right?!)

Thanks a lot and have a good Sunday. Looking forward to read all that nerdy knowledge (as we all are!)

Not an expert but a long time fan. Looking forward for people reply.

What are its dimensions?

I was late to the brand, chatted with some sales agents with experience a few years ago, they recommended Luminor Marina Pam 113 small seconds, I have since sourced submersible also but the Radiomir in your post seems to be getting a lot of love lately. If you are just going to source one from the brand buy a Luminor since it has the distinctive crown locking guard that is notable to Panerai.

I have owned several Panerai. I have sold all except for one of the older classic models PAM111. I see Panerai as a 44mm, sandwich dial, small seconds Luminor. Not a fan of the Submersible, or Radiomir and honestly prefer the old Pocket watch movement over the new ones. It seems more romantic to me. Maybe I'm just weird like that. Good luck

Firstly, go to a boutique/AD, get them on your wrist. I am a Paneraiisti through and through. But until you get one on your wrist. Feel it etc etc do not buy on the web.

Sizing is now between 38mm 47mm, Panerai have hit the sweet spot with Quaranta at 40mm with both the Luminor Marina and the Radiomir. The Radiomir in 40mm sandwich dial is simply beautiful in the metal. But for me the Radiomir is the OG military Diver so I own the 45mm hand wound painted indices Base, which for me has a history no other can compare to. I have owned 44/42mm Luminor, but I currently also own a Quaranta Marina and it is stunning, it is a go / wear anywhere watch. Search the models remove the repetitive chaff from the wheat. Look at what they do exceedingly well, simple well executed timepieces that have a history that no other has. Ignore the haters pointless comments. Ignore the 100m water resistance argument, most Panerai owners have never taken it in a pool let alone diving, stand next to a 100m building look up, then make the decision about is that deep enough. But, and this is singularly the most important advice in my opinion. TRY THEM ON. I would say that about anything from 1000 pounds up. Never buy anything from the interweb until you put it on, hell of a costly mistake at these prices. Oh BEWARE OF FAKES! If going preowned. 🍻

I'm with you my friend. I do like the look of this Radiomir model. However, I've just not found the right one for me. I know their watches have a diver inspiration and have always been on the larger side. But I have smaller wrists. So I've been looking hard at the Luminor Due 38mm.

I have one Panerai in my collection, a PAM 312. It's 44mm however will fit well on any wrist 7 1/4 inch or above. Panerais are great as it's all about the straps, which change the look of the watch completely.

Hey! Thanks a lot for that deep answer. You’re right, trying them on is the first step and I wouldn’t do otherwise.

It’s true that Pamerai don’t get as much good press as they might should have. And that’s why I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and learn and discover something new.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and will help me/the community to get more hungry for Panerai!

Hi Patrick,

Which one of the Due would you tend to go with?

Thanks a lot for all these recommendations. Do you still have the 113?

Hi! Yes I do. I am interested in a Radiomir with California dial but my preference is to always purchase new from an ad so the price is somewhat rigid these days, ads here do not offer courtesy discounts. First world problem, lol. Take care, good luck buying a Pam. 👍

Hi Patrick,

Which one of the Due would you tend to go with?

I like the PAM 755 with the sandwich dial and the small seconds at the 9. But that’s just me. There are others that may interest you too.

So guys,

I did my research in store and I have to say I have been blown away by the quality and feel of the watch.

The Luminor is really big, large and the crown is massive. So you have to be cut for that design (which is awesome and very distinctive).

The Rasiomir is the what I would prefer to wear on a daily basis. And the tones of the dials are very nicely done. The case is somehow brushed, makes it very special. Something that explain (I guess) the increase of price with that limited edition I’m interested in. Not a real deal breaker but could be :)

Overall, I’m impressed and could be the next on list for me.

You can get preowned panerais for a good price that is a lot of bang for your buck. They are very well done and a true luxury watch and the wearing experience is truly second to none given all of the cool factors of the watch. I recommend going with a luminor so you get to experience the very cool crown lock system.

I bought a preowned luminor Marina 8 day for 4200 after shipping with box and papers. It was originally a 7,900 watch. These are floating around and you get an in house movement, an exhibition case back, a whopping 8 days of power reserve, clean classic dial, and crown lock system.
