Test Drive: Rose Gold Rolex Daytona

I had the opportunity to try on the Rolex Daytona in rose gold on the rubber strap. The watch was very nice, polished, and flashy. Hard to believe it shares the same DNA as Rolex chronographs from the 60s, which were no nonsense tool watches. This one is closer to a jewelry piece than it is to a pure tool watch.

I also have to say that the Daytona did not feel irresistible or give me any burning desire to own it. Perhaps it’s that the watch is so present on social media that I’m a little fatigued of seeing the Daytona and it didn’t really have a big impact when I saw it in person.

I think I prefer a Zenith Chromaster sport to this one, regardless of price.

Great you tried it on and to see there are still some out there with the chocolate dial as it has now been discontinued.

No desire to own a Daytona myself. There’s a few reasons why.

  1. There’s a lot of hype behind them. With the internet and social media being what it is, these watches are more recognizable than ever. Every Instagram finance bro has a Daytona and you’re likely to get robbed for this more than pretty much any other Rolex.

  2. It’s a Chronograph. And yes, I do own a watch that looks like a Daytona, but it isn’t functionality better than a 5970 or Offshore Chronograph. The Daytona hype was, for some reason, the one that seemed to bring this watch to astronomical highs.

  3. Rolex and the ADs were scumbags the way they decided who was “worthy” enough to own one. I have friends who could afford any watch they want and they were laughed out of an AD because they didn’t have a “buying history” with that AD. Money is money. If you don’t want it, I’m sure another watch dealer will.

Idk, I just don’t get it. I’d much rather wear a Gevril Tribeca and lose a $1,000 watch (even though that would still suck) than risk loosing a $40,000 watch.

Some love it. Some don't. At the end of the day it's just a watch. Go for the Chronomaster Sport if that moves the needle for you.

There is a lot of hype around the Daytona although on a Braclet or oyster flex never really floated my boat.

·

Its definitely a nice watch don't get me wrong but I'd choose a zenith every day due to them having the same movement ancestor as the Daytona

Plus I could never afford a Daytona

Forgive me for saying this, but that watch is too big for your wrist. Does not look good, imho.

I agree. Maybe it’s the way the rubber strap shoots out away from the case, or maybe the color combos. I currently wear a 41mm Tudor as my daily, but the Daytona somehow looks bigger than that
