Your laptop is also a timepiece. It tells the time.

I don't mind the term, timepiece, but I will if you decide to selectively refer to watches above a certain price that way. It's like if someone tried to call luxury cars specifically "automobiles."

Get quite a buzz calling my Casio Calculator a Timepiece. Each to their own!

·

The word timepiece is nearly two hundred years older then the word wrist-watch. It just meant clock. Call your $10 drugstore watch a timepiece if it makes you happy. No one should care.

·

Timepiece is a general term used for both clocks & watches.

Watch is shortened from wristwatch.

There is no "cut off." A watch & a timepiece mean the same thing, regardless of value.

Since we're being pedantic (I love that), surely pocket watches were here first. Wristwatch was originally "wristlet watch", a watch for a slim wrist of a lady.

There are no pecuniary parameters when referring to a wristwatch or timepiece, however there is a cohort in modern society that believe wearing any device for telling the time to be pretentious just as a former boss refused to wear a watch preferring a subordinate to wear one to inform him when called upon.

I don’t take it as a sign of snobbery. People just like their near-synonyms and synonyms. Certain watched terminology usages, Such as being slaved to French for just single words, or phrases is really silly
