Watch Winding - Both Directions?

When I was growing up - prior to quartz - everybody wound their watches by winding the watch in two directions. Occasionally I find myself winding the watch in both directions in a back and forth motion. Is this winding approach detrimental to the watch movement?

You mean like turning the crown back and forth? No I don’t see why that would hurt the movement. There’s no resistance opposite of the wind direction. I catch myself doing that sometimes too and it feels less efficient than just letting go of the crown and winding one direction

I believe it's comparable to pedaling a bicycle backwards, going forward engages the wind, going backwards does nothing. My watchmaker does it that way just so he doesn't have to keep resetting his fingers to first position.

The only possible downside I can see in winding anti clockwise would be potentially loosening the crown from the stem if your really unlucky.
