early regrets

Have you ever bought a watch online which you regretted buying before it even arrived? This happened to me when I purchased Starking's homage to Nomos Lambda.

What was the problem? Closer inspection of the infos in the listing (after the purchase, alas) showed that the thing that looked like the power reserve indicator of the Lambda was here nothing of the sort, just an ordinary hours dial. Worse, pretty much any other homage to this watch (Cadisen, Reef Tiger, Feice, Guanqin) has this as a functioning complication.

I was pretty angry with myself for missing that.😠

I've had buyer's regret more times than I care to count. Normally on impulse purchases, which I have been more careful about the last couple of years.

I bought a watch that I thought was a good deal from Aliexpress that I realized I did not love (the design was pretty basic). I bought it solely because I thought it was a good deal. It took a long time arriving and halfway through I started regretting buying it. I ended up giving it away.

I think buying a watch because it is a "good deal" is really only a good idea when you are an actual watch dealer.

A simple design is not so much a deal breaker for me: I have a Parnis dress watch with a super-simple design which I really like, because it is just what I want a dress watch to be. On the other side of the coin, I own an Addiesdive subby homage (at least I think that's what it's trying to emulate) with a more complex design which leaves me cold. Yeah, it's a spec-monster, yes nothing wrong with the vintage design, but all it does for me is remind me why diver watches don't do it for me.

Part of the journey. Use each watch, even the ones you get rid of to better refine your taste and what you find important or desirable in a watch.

There was one watch I regretted buying online before it even arrived, but it was because of other watches in my collection. Early in my watch collecting journey, when I was still learning, I purchased some Invicta watches. I had purchased four of them prior to the regret, and while I was waiting for the fifth to arrive, two of them broke. One had the crown and stem come out and the other one the bezel came off and would not reattach, neither of which was covered by the limited warranties. So, I was regretting ordering another one before it even arrived, and it held true to form. The movement stopped working within a month of receiving it, actually breaking completely free in the care. That was covered by the limited warranty, but I just cut my losses and never bothered to send it in. Three out of five Invicta watches broke within a year, so I do not buy Invicta anymore.
