solid and plain as a general rule, see-through is fine and sometimes desired, but for me only if it is a manual-wind or impressive chrono with excellent finishing

Definitely above the bone, closer to elbow. But I do have one watch that just begs to be worn loose and relaxed and slips down to the hand.
