Two-toned Steel/Gold: Yay or Nay?

What are your views regarding bicolor steel + gold watches? Do you think it is easy to carry it off? What about resale? Are they usually harder to sell second hand?

I like the look of two tone silver and gold but have never owned one... especially those high end pieces.

Not sure why I've never had one but maybe I think they are too flash for me😎

I am becoming a fan of bi-color watches. I own a Oris Divers Bico, for sure no classic bi-color, because it is bronze.

However I am on the list for a Rolesor Explorer I. I love the look of yellow gold, but don't want a full gold watch, too flashy for me. Bi-color is the perfect compromise. And sure the resale value is lower, but watches are here to wear and not to resale. Additionally, it is easer to get them at list price at the AD. ;)

Another point for me is that by German court decision watches are articles of daily use if they contain less then 50% precious metal. So they are no jewelry, which means that they are covered by normal insurances for theft or so.

Personally I dislike them 😅.

The craze for bi-color came out in the late 1970's as a way to grab part of the market of people who could not afford the very expensive all gold versions....Later it became accepted as visually attractive. It is a a very dated look, and retro lovers today find it evocative.

I just find them neither fish nor fowl, and prefer an all steel, all gold (or Ti or whatever) than a mix. Just my 2 cents....

I like some, but not most.

I think the GO SeaQ two tone is stunning, but mostly because it keeps the amount of gold to a subtle level. I find most others look rather "used car salesman".

For me it depends on the watch. As @KristianG said, many two tone models have the "used car salesman" vibe, which needless to say is not a positive thing :-).

I also agree with @Pascal that the new two tone explorer is actually a really nice watch. I can understand that many might lump it into the used car salesman group, but I feel that the clean design with the black dial and smooth bezel,  coupled with the oyster style bracelet , give it a classy look that is less in-your-face than a full gold model.

Agree. I think it is about the whole look and there are many more considerations e.g which outfit to match a two-toned watch and when to wear it. definitely not suitable as a daily watch imo, else will look like a loan shark. 😅

I think they are a great addition to any collection. They give off a different vibe and is a good alternative when switching around styles. Nowadays dressing has become less formal and 2 tones can even readily fit into casual wear to give off a different look and feel. :))

They have that late 70s, early 80s rough and rugged vibe. A bit like a Bodie and Doyle two pints with whiskey chasers over lunch, before a car chase and fist fight in an abandoned warehouse sort of look. Easy to wipe the blood off as it’s stainless steel, and the lack of leather strap means they don’t smell of cigarettes and stale beer.

I have a couple of Heuers like this, get a lot of wrist time.

Well, guess in which camp I'm in 😀😎 My favourite kind of sports watches apart from the rare solid gold number. But than again, I lean towards a dressier style anyway.
