Supercars vs. Richard Mille

Strange: I suspect many of us here enjoy cars too; perhaps following blogs about supercars or subscribed to a sportcar magazine or F1 fanclub.

Yet, sports car lovers do not constantly complain about the cars they can never afford in such newsposts, they instead simply enjoy reading or learning about their favorite cars and/or brands.

No one has to love Richard Mille (or any other expensive brand for that matter), but the discussion about 'why are they so expensive' seems rather beside the point to me. Might as well ask why a Ferrari or Lamborghini is so expensive? It is also just a motor and 4 wheels, right?

Anyway: it is much easier to drive a Fiat 500 with your shoppng in the back seat as you drive over the speed bump on the way home.. 😆 But I still enjoy reading about Ferrari's.

If I'm reading your post accurately, this seems to be those who don't understand the "why" of various goods and their perceived value and, how certain individuals question it. In my experience it's envy/jealousy and stubbornness. I had a Ducati Diavel and if I had a penny for every time someone asked me how much it cost or why I bought it I'd a billionaire.

I agree it's a futile point for people to squabble about the cost of various items, cars, watches etc. because at the end of the day, the purchaser is the one who decides on the intrinsic value.

On a side note, Richard Mille and Racing. I like F1 quite a bit, but I'm not a huge fan of Richard Mille. I appreciate the uniqueness of them but as we say in the motorcycle world, "It's not for me".

I am having the same experience you had with your Ducati. I am driving a 2011 Panamera 4S that I bought used three years ago. It cost me less than a new Camry. If I had a penny everytime someone asked me how much it cost I could afford a 2022 Panamera. There are a lot of comments about my car as it stands out in the sea of trucks in the parking lot.

I suspected that this was going to happen when I bought it but I decided to say F-it. Tomorrow is not promised. I love cars, and particularly to drive cars. I need to live a little.

It's crazy how much people care about how someone spends their money. I used to tell the people who asked, "Ducati has the information you need" or something like that. I also agree life is short live your best life and enjoy it.

Btw...the Panamera is straight fire! Awesome ride and congrats!

Great post!

Unfortunately, I didn't have the same experience as you with regard to cars.  I used to be a car guy, and then made the mistake of joining a car forum.  Every other post on the forum would be, "Why would someone waste their money on that???"  Followed by the inevitable, "Some people just have more money than sense."

WTF???

We're on a forum in which everyone here owns a performance car that costs more than the median American household makes in the course of 2 years!  And somebody just posted a picture of a car that costs only marginally more, and that person is an idiot, and you're not???

There is no WatchCrunch equivalent in the car world.  Thus, I stopped being a car guy and became a watch guy.  😜

We're all idiots wasting our money on something; only the amounts and objects vary.

I think that cars of any preference (and by extension, motorcycles) are the closest thing to watches as enthusiasms go.  Based on my watches you might be surprised to learn that I have, at various times, owned as daily drivers a 1954 Oldsmobile 88, 1961 Ford Falcon, 1968 Ford Thunderbird (with the Thunderjet), 1972 Mercedes SEL, 1972 Mazda RX-2, and a 1973 Dodge Dart.  They were all "vintage" when I owned them. If I sold any of them to you I am truly sorry.

Car enthusiasts are as judgmental as watch enthusiasts. It is all tribalism. Richard Mille is not in my tribe, but I am not a hater. God, I loved that Thunderbird.

I almost got a panigale. They are so awesome! Unfortunately the Ducati Dealer in my state, who happens to be the only one, is a shark on pricing and service. Very bad. I moved on to Harley at this point, but I do want to get another Ducati. That bike was super fun!
