Hey crunchers. I had created a post about My dad's watches and included the Gruen Curvex pictured above. I didn't think anything of it until @petra.petra reached out yesterday asking a few questions. I figured I needed to do some research.
It's in great condition and doesn't seem to have too much wear. I thought it was a 90's watch based upon what I could find, but after speaking with my dad he thinks otherwise. He believes his parents (my grandparents) gave it to him when he graduated college in the mid-60's.
Can anyone help direct me to some information where I can find out more about this #gruen #curvex model?
Thanks in advance!

The nearly identical case and dial seen here
https://www.lelandlittle.com/items/523759/a-gruen-i-curvex-i-watch-and-a-montblanc-i-summit-i-stainless-steel-watch?listId=194419
is listed as quartz and has a rather modern looking clear printed sticker on the case back. Quartz didn't come around till the sixties had passed. The "Since 1874" seems very modern retro to me as well, as does gold plated base metal.

Yeah, my dad's timeline isn't adding up. I would love to know more of the history of this for my own value. Thanks for giving me some information.
Whoever owned the Gruen name released a flurry of quartz facsimiles of older watch styles in the 1980's. I suspect that this is from that time. Vintage styling was very au courant for a short time along with big hair and shoulder pads.
I found this Ebay listing that says it is a reissue, but doesn't date it.

Interesting. Where did you get that information from? Super interesting. Thanks.
Here's a link you will find interesting. The blogger is a real Gruen nerd.

It's like the Gruen Bible! Thank you.

That site you sent was very cool. The eBay link is the closest I can find to this watch. It says it's 1980's which makes more sense to me being that it's definitely quartz. Thank you so much.

My pleasure man, enjoy the watch!

I don't even know where I got some things that I "know". I have spent way too much time on Gruen fan websites and message boards.
Gruen has a long and storied history starting in the late 1800s. The Curvex is one of Gruen’s most popular lines which started in the 1930s with a manually wound movement (cal.330?). There was a 1990s reissue which had a quartz movement. Is this manual or quartz?

It’s quartz.
