An Homage to my Grandfather

Hello crunchers- a short post about my Grandfather…

He was a pilot in the US Navy during World War II in the pacific. He flew a F4U Corsair off of an aircraft carrier. He is pictured here on the far left at the hotel Coronado shortly after the war was over (alongside Bob Silverston and Chuck Houston). Chuck Houston also authored the book that the watches are on, Flying With Iron Angels. It’s an incredible memoir of his time leading up to and flying in World War II.

Anyway, for the longest time I wanted to track down the watch that my grandfather wore as a pilot. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get ahold of his actual watch but I did get ahold of a navy issued World War II pilot watch,a Walthem A11.

The watch still runs but is in delicate shape. Also, with my 7.625in wrists, the watch is TINY. I decided to buy the Praesidus A11 replica recently and I am very happy with it so far.

The purpose of all this is to have a watch that I can wear everyday and remember my grandfather, and appreciate him and all of the brave men and women that have sacrificed so much just so we can do what we love to do.

Thanks for listening.

Great story and cool watches.

Absolutely brilliant!

I was very fortunate to inherit my grandfathers watch (He was in the first airborne division at arnhem). I don't think he wore this watch at the time but it's amazing to have a personal link to our vintage watches.

I must have had total dad brain when I posted this. This IS a Praesidus A11, not a Vaer. I updated the post. Thanks for the reminder haha!

It looked too familiar. I have the A11 type 44 32mm version.
