My newly purchased Sinn U50 "review" - Updated

Some info about the watch: Its made of German submarine steel and the diameter is 41mm, lug-to-lug is 47mm and lug width is 20mm, its powered by a Selita sw300-1 with a decorated Sinn rotor, its water resistant to 50 bar and its certified as a dive watch by DNV Just got this Sinn U50, so far amazed by the quality of this watch, I wanted a watch that can handle basically anything for about $2500 and this watch overdelivers, its water resistant to 50 bar and certified by DNV, the the timing bezel is incredible and the watch is extremely legible.

The case and bracelet is made of german submarine steel, which has more robust anti corrosive properties compared to regular 316L. It fits my 165mm wrist perfectly (imo) and wears very comfortably, not that heavy and the bracelet is very comfortable, I do think the clasp is a bit cheap for the price you pay but its not really noticeable and still high quality.

The movement is a sw300-1 with a Sinn rotor, it has 25 jewels, beats at 4 hz and has a 42 hours power reserve, overall a great third party movement that is also thinner than the sw200 in the U1 and more accurate, the only reason I gave the movement a 4.5 star rating instead of 5 is because the power reserve is a bit low imo, I have a $500 hamilton that has 80 hours of power reserve, not a deal breaker by any means but a bit (really not) annoying to me :/ I'd also like to mention that the Sinn team was extremely helpful with a UPS shipping issue and helped me resloved is in a matter of  hours

Conclusion: The U50 ticks all the boxes for a tool watch, I bought it for my army service but really it can be used in any enviroment, has it's own identity and comes at a great price P.S its my first 'review' so I might have missed some information, wanted to give it a try and maybe start a discussion here about this amazing watch, thank you for reading and please comment with anything you have to add about this watch :)

update after 1 month of ownership: so far the watch is brilliant, gains 1 second a day, went diving with it twice and it held up great obviously, legibility underwater is great and I couldn’t be happier with it

  • The bezel action is great, its firm and muted and doesn't really have any play (some reviews say it does but I didnt notice any)
  • Its extremely legible, you can read the time from 10 metres away and the crystal ar coating is close to perfect
  • the bracelet is very comfortable, the clasp is half stamped but you don't really notice it and it feels great
  • The clasp body is stamped which is a bit disappointed but not too bad, it also doesnt have any on the fly adjustments
  • The design of the watch is very tool-oriented, you might not like it, I do

Excellent review mate. Agree that its the ideal do it anything watch for the price. The only thing that stops me adding one to the rotation is the handset. I just cannot get on board with them. Subjective i know, but a big negative for me. Other than this a great / legendary piece.

Thank you for replying and thank you for the compliment, I personally think the handset which also make the watch a lot more legible, add to the toolish aesthetics of the watch, I like that they are meant to be legible before looking good and that is what makes them look good (in my opinion 😀)

completely, the hands are super legible for sure. if they had pointed or square flat end tips id already be an owner. the current set are just not for me. clearly this doesn't make them bad in any way. its a lovely watch. due to make personnel issue with the hands on the U1/U50 series I've looked hard at the U2 and UX. disregarding my small issue, think nearly all on the WC would agree the Sinn Divers are cracking watches

·

I really like the U2, would be wearing it instead of the u50 if it was smaller, unfortuantly anything bigger than the u50 will be too big for me

·

Great review and I could not agree more. The U50 ticks all the boxes for a tool watch with it's own identity.

exactly! unique design, extremely robust, fairly priced, what more could you ask for, also that black bezel looks great🔥

the watch is fantastic and the clasp is alright, its not great but the important parts are milled, and the stamped parts quality is really good (for stamped), its thin and relatively small, comes with a useful diver's extension, so its not that bad, it could be better though :)
your watch looks awesome btw, fits you well :)

Tried to get one of these earlier in the year but with 6 month wait, bought a Bell and Ross diver ,this is still on my radar

Interesting, I didn't know there was a waiting list, it was shipped to my a day after ordering and arrived 3 days later, I guess I'm lucky or they fixed their supply issue, anyways Bell and Ross make great watches so you are probably happy with your purchase as well :)

·

In my opinion, the clasp isn't a deal breaker by any means, its not the greatest but certainly not the worst, its comfortable and looks good, only lacks on the fly micro adjustment and thats really not a deal breaker as far as I am concerned (could be fully milled but I don't mind tbh)

·

yes the rubber strap comes with a fully milled and overall a better clasp, and yes I agree the claps that comes on the bracelet doesnt do the watch justice but even considering that, I would get it on a bracelet, but if you like rubber straps, the clasp issue is non-existent as far as you should care :)

Thanks for your thoughts! This is a watch that has been on my mind for a while. My hangups with it are the hands and the size. I feel like it may be a bit too large for my taste, although I have heard others (like yourself) say that they like the size on their smaller wrists. With how distinct this design is, I do think I would have to see it in person to arrive at a solid opinion (on the hands and the watch overall).

I really like the hands, I think they contribute a lot to legibility and makes the watch look unique, contribute to the identity of it, but thats subjective, about the size, it wears great on my 6.4 inch wrist, don't know your wrist size but I added an image of the watch on my wrist, that should give you some idea (it looks bigger when you take a picture), if you ever get a chance to visit berlin, make sure you drop by their factory store, its great and the people are awesome, you should be able to try it there, cheers

It's a great piece and one I have liked for a long time I might get the oil filled quartz UX though as I like a quartz and have a couple of automatic Sinn already. A 556 and a 857 utc

Wow I've never seen one without the date😍 was this a limited edition? 👀

Yeah, it's the U50 pro from WatchBuys. Only 150 were made so it sold out fast. I love the no date dial but there is a "ghost date" stop when you pull out the crown.

You’d have to beat me to it haha

I love the no date and lack of red on this model. The new T50 has my attention as I was most likely going to put this on rubber anyway. The bed to own a titanium watch with a selitta just has to win the battle over me finally buying something like a black bay however.

But honestly I don't like dates in watches with lower power reserves. I don't mind seeing the time or adjusting because it's slow or fast but idk why the date bothers me to adjust hahaha

Haha yes, the date is a bother on watches with a lower power reserve, the T50 is a limited edition as well right?

Yes it’s great, what’s your opinion on it? I personally won’t buy it because I don’t like titanium watches but it’s really objectively great

I think it's totally bad ass. Love the new look without the red. Would not go for the gold bronze bezel but it's very attractive and the rubbers a nice touch if I really wanted just a straight up diver to take into the water and on adventures. But for me I always am looking for something I can wear in many situations and I'd still opt for a Tudor BB54/58 for around the same price
