Captain’s Log 001 - BB58

I figure I should take advantage of WatchCrunch and leave myself a record of how I feel about my current collection and notes any future purchases. A captain’s log of my collection journey! Here goes:

I’ve had my Black Bay 58 for 1.5 years at the time of this submission. I bought it without the bracelet as I wasn’t a fan of the rivets or bracelets at the time. I slightly regret it, but I haven’t had any urge to put on a bracelet. There are great aftermarket options such as Forstner and Uncle Seiko. However, I have been perfectly fine with my array of Natos, Barton and Artem straps.

I fell in love with it’s mixture of tooly and dressy aesthetic. Tool in the sense that its can actually be used for diving (I wouldn’t risk it) and that its chronometer certified. Dressy in a way that the guilt gold gives it a certain air that demands respect. Depending on what strap I have it on, I can wear it to almost every occasion. It is by far my favorite watch in my box.

I saw a recent TGV video of him reviewing his follower’s collections and he mentioned that he almost loathes the BB58 because its so common and one of the most talked about watches in the community. The hipster in me agrees. It is a very mainstream wristwatch. But I also thought, “for a good reason!” The BB58 has become an icon. So much so that its become overplayed. I’m okay with that.

What I really see as a negative is that the BB58 can be a one and done watch. To the point where I can’t justify buying another diver. My only other dive watch is the Seiko Samurai Dark Manta. Its different enough that I would wear it over the BB58 on some days and cheap enough (relatively speaking) to take into the ocean. I’ll save that for another captain’s log.

To conclude this log, the Black Bay 58 isn’t leaving my collection. It shaped my collecting philosophy and was my very first big boy AD purchase. It has been on too many adventures with me. A perfect companion.
