Winders yes ? Winders no ?

The purpose of this piece is the question, a perpetual calendar although I only use it and for a week every month and a half on average, this is because I rotate my watches [I use ALL of them]. It concerns me that whenever I look at it it must be up to date, time and date. Working 24/7 365!!

I think for those that have perpetual calendars a winder makes a lot of sense.

For a perpetual calendar, I guess.

For any other watch, it's just additional wear and tear on the movement and marketing puppeteers trying to convince you to buy more overpriced watch accessories you don't need.

I just recently purchased a winder to keep two watches running throughout the week so I can grab a watch and not have to fiddle with it before starting my day. I think your need for one is totally justified. I wouldn't want to have to set that complication every time I wanted to wear the watch either.

When I got my Omega Globemaster, the AD gave me a winder as a bonus. I used it for about 3 months before I realized that I like fiddling with my watches, so I stopped using it. Of course my watch is an annual calendar watch so it is pretty simple to set. If I had an annual calendar then I would definitely use the winder.

I’ll be honest, at one time I had six double winders….i gave them all away. Simply put, I love interacting with the watches. Setting the date, even the annual calendars, and just hearing the winding when I turn the crown. It’s just my time in the morning to just relax. I make the time and rarely, if ever, not a lot it when I get up in the morning. I work from home, so maybe that’s cheating. I just feel that it’s part of the experience.

I use winders on all my automatic watches - simple day-daters. Never had an issue for years.

I do that job with the other XX pieces omc 🫠 hahahaa

I only use my winder for my annual calendar, don’t have perpetual calendar 🤣

Yes! Can’t be arsed having a box of watches that are dead. Tried it that way for years and found that I didn’t wear them as much. I have 8 on winders and I service my watches. I often change my watches twice a day and I have every one always ready. Each to their own though.

·

Winders yes. I don't always have time to set time and date in the morning and anything with a date without a quickset ends up on the winder.

Is there evidence that a winder properly setup does more wear and tear than a person actually wearing the watch?

I have watches over 60 years old that were worn daily for a long time, while they have been serviced quite a few times, they still work fine I suspect the wear and tear bit might be a bit of pearl clutching. 😬

Yes for perpetual

A winder just ises up the lofe of your lubricants. A watch not running isn't wearing its pivots

·

I only keep my GMT’s on a winder because I don’t like to re-set them. My other autos I manually wind a couple times a year.

I think winders are a bit of a gimmick, especially since most jewelers give them away for nothing with a decent automatic watch. BUT I would definitely use one if I had a perpetual, or a moonphase. Any other watches can be set from a quartz but I can't be arsed Googling the moonphase that day as well!

Having a perpetual calendar would be the only reason for me to have a winder. I swap out my watch weekly and enjoy setting it on the first day.
