[Hamilton] Spirit of Liberty Chronograph - 2 Years on the Wrist Review

2 years. How fast time goes (usually). During the time the watch has been with me for many memories, and also was in Switzerland for 4 months for a full service. My thoughts on the watch, about 1 year into ownership, was that it was a beautiful watch with execution flaws. And that's how I still feel about the watch today.

On paper it doesn't sound like a huge watch, albeit a big watch: 42mm diameter, 52mm lug to lug, 15mm thickness. However the male end link that doesn't fold adds to the effective lug-to-lug, making it almost 62mm. The thickness, the 22mm lugs, overall the watch wears even larger than 42mm might suggest.

One workaround I found out by accident was to use thinner lug pins. This allowed the first links to fold downwards more, allowing it to wear more true to size. Other methods of making the watch wear smaller were to put it on straps.

The watch was about 10 seconds fast per day before service, now it runs about 10 seconds slow. Honestly as the watch lacks a running seconds hand, it really doesn't show the first few days. It's also within specs so I'm not bothered at all.

The watch is very shiny. It "plays with the light" very well, especially the rose gold applied indices. However the lack of AR coating and the reflectiveness of the silver dial makes the watch not the best choice to wear for outings in the sun.

I still have a love-not so love relationship with the watch. Sometimes I'm just mesmerized by how it looks, othertimes I just can't get over how clunky it looks. Sometimes I think the chronograph function is fun, especially how the pushers feel, but sometimes I can't get over the nearly useless 2.5min markers. I still think the watch is one strap away from being a perfect everyday piece, I'll be experimenting more with time.

Maybe it needs a two tone bracelet.

Thank you ☺️ And haha, I think if you have larger wrists the watch is excellent as a dressy sports watch. Higher up on the price tag, IWC has the Portofino line which looks similar but a little fancier.

I had the same watch for over a year and agree with everything you've said. Favorite part of ownership - watching the cam and levers actuate through the display caseback.

To put it bluntly, this watch was like an overweight ballerina trying to sit on my wrist. Looks fantastic in the watch box though!

That's a great way of putting it 😂 I'm not sure what Hamilton could have done to alleviate the issue (if they had to keep the 42mm size), maybe thinner lugs?
