The First Seiko Diver’s Watch With A GMT Function

Seiko just released a couple of Solar quartz GMT models in their Sumo case, a first for them apparently. I do remember a few kinetic Padi models but don't know how this is their first GMT divers model.

It has a new 5K65 solar module. Seiko killing it with their textured dials like always....comes in ocean green (SFK003) and ocean blue (SFK001). Probably this is a start and soon we will be seeing the automatic GMT movement in other models. In Seiko's words

The first Seiko solar-powered watch with a GMT function, its brightly colored 24-hand opens a new frontier for the Seiko diver’s watch.

Pricing is $780, lesser than the automatic version of the standard sumo models. Available now. Excited to see what other models will receive this solar module.

And no syringe hands… think this may be one of the first modern Seikos I like the look of. Though I still am not a fan of the 4:00 crown. Do like the rest of this design though…

The Sumo model has been available for years. The 4'o clock crown is a personal preference but it is quite comfortable in practice, especially on a big watch the crown doesn't dig into your wrist.

I feel like the tiny 24 hour markers make it difficult to use as a GMT.

Then again, this is a huge watch, so they might actually be readable. Haha!

·

Pity about the size. Too large for me. Ah well good news for my wallet.

The sumo case is 45mm but at the same time, it wears quite small on the wrist which in person you appreciate the case design. It really has that Seiko case magic of making a large watch wear small on the wrist but you are better off if you have 6.5 inch wrist or larger to handle this. Also, it is one of the more complicated case designs, with a lot of surfaces and a recessed bezel which is encased by the case sides.

Definitely going to be seeing more dive watch GMT this year.

If this was in titanium and a little smaller, I think this would be awesome! Heck, I'm tempted to try one out as is. :D

Nice...  right after I ordered a 43mm titanium Citizen Promaster solar traveler's GMT.  Citizen is ahead of the game in almost every respect on this, but these Seiko dials!  Tempting...

The price would be awesome too if they decide to make the Sumo case in titanium😅

I have three of the earlier released Kinetic gmts, all True gmts that can move date backwards. Do a search for the Seiko Yeti, my favourite one ! Like the sumo in titanium though better 👍

I'll just sit back and see if Seiko release any more models with this movement, but I'm hoping for a colourway which is less bright and more subtle. Just give me a black or dark blue option please 🙏

There are definitely more models coming in the future.

They released a couple of other classic Sumo colourways too.

Man, this is the movement and form that I've been looking for! I went to try on an automatic sumo just to see how it sat on my wrist and unfortunately that lug to lug definitely hangs over the edges of my wrist. Because the lugs are curved down, aesthetically it fits my wrist at every angle except for straight down, what a bummer. Really hoping they can squeeze this movement into a smaller case or even sell the movement so the mod community can have at it!

Many other models will come with this movement in the future, the Sumo model is just the start. It will definitely make it into their smaller divers too.

Now this is the kind of hope I need! Very excited to see what's to come
