"They obviously appeal to a very large number of people - most importantly non-collectors who are purchasing them as an accoutrement of success." 

Rolex has been very successful (albeit unintentionally) in turning these "non-collectors" of accouterments into ardent (even rabid) collectors. Especially for vintage references. 

Marketing hyperbole aside, the back catalog is highly collectible due to odd production nuances. Mix with clever product placement, event sponsorship, brand ambassadors, and you have one of the most fun brands to collect. Its a heady mix of celebrity, aspiration, and human achievement.

I'm not excusing bogus claims, but feel you've been a little harsh on a beloved brand and their collectors.

You're not wrong on any point of fact but I'm unswayed. 

My interest and attraction to this brand is neither objective nor rational...

And while this is no excuse, advertising has always been outsourced
