How could I not take the chance? I picked this up on EBay for 16 bucks… just ordered 2 straps from Amazon for $20 each…..poor investment?

here’s a shot of the movement

🍻. $16.  Nice!

·

Vintage Oris, with a California dial, for USD 16! Uau!

·

EBay seller out of India, no doubt. "Mumbai Special."

The case may or may not have ever held a Oris movement. Dial is definitely not original, nor even close. Likely hands are not original as well.

What you have is a watch with a automatic movement. But that's not a Oris watch.

For the price of a coffee and a sandwich at Starbucks? Awesome!

'Investment' isn't the word I would use, but if you love the look of it then why not at that price? 🍻

I only recently realised that you can get a bucket load of vintage ORIS for dirt cheap online. Seems like a no-brainer to me! They made some pretty funky watches during the 70s too!

I understand that, in fact don't forget the crystal that's not original either (feels like plexi)! but for the price couldn't resist rolling the dice, and I can always use the new straps on something else if I have to scrap it.

Investment was defiantly a poor choice of words, I never considered re-sale just hope it keeps ticking and  I can wear it for a few times

This watch is the Golden Ticket.  Many years ago Oris took a clerk from the mail room and had him hand-paint an Oris dial.  He protested that he didn't have any experience in watch making, that he was just a clerk, but they insisted. They gave him an old Tudor as a model and left him on his own.  It took him several tries because he just could not get the lettering right.  When he was finished they told him to go buy an old watch from the Salvation Army down the street, any one would do.

Once the watch was assembled he was told to throw a dart at a map of the world. His dart landed closest to Mumbai, so off to Mumbai the watch went.

The person who returns this rarest of Oris to Holstein gets a guided tour of the factory.  It is recommended that you take a family member.  Allegedly, there is a surprise at the end of the tour.

So, congratulations to the new owner of Oris, @mk6501

(As long as you know what you have and are happy with it, enjoy it.)

Be careful with eBay sellers from India.  Some are good, but some will simply vanish after you pay.  Thankfully, eBay has good buyer protection.
