A (belated) introduction from a Brazilian budget collector

I didn't know I could make an introduction post, so let me join the party.

As the title says, I am from Brazil, and I am collecting budget watches. Part of the reason is that I don't earn much - I'm working as a freelance translator, and I am still trying to finish college, delayed by a lot because of 2020 stuffs.

But not earning much doesn't stop me, and I got interested in watches not long after I started working, since I wanted to buy a watch - I sadly lost or threw out my first one, because it was before I appreciated watches - and while looking at what to get I went into the rabbit hole and got myself collecting some pieces.

It shows in all colors my current majority is composed of Casio watches, but that is because I love how affordable yet stylish they look, especially when I look for a retrofuturistic style that Casio easily provides. The Royale (AE1200) is my favorite one of all, but the "first among equals" sort, since it is the one I am using all the time. The SGW-100 is another contender for a daily beater, by being sturdy yet comfortable to wear. I enjoyed the brand so much, I bought a Casio of many different models to my family, each fitting each one's taste, like the MRW analog watch with the camo dial for my younger brother, who enjoys the "military" style but was worried if a watch didn't look nice in his big wrist, and the MRW, although technically small, fits in the looks perfectly.

But since I am Brazilian, I also have access to some brands maybe you have not seen before, like Technos - an entry level brand that sells watches between around 60 and 300 dollars, if converting currency, but they have been around since the 1960s, which shows through my Vintage Technos, a small diameter automatic watch that probably hails from the 70s. My current aim for a next watch is another discontinued automatic from Technos, an Alarmdate.

I am not sure if I am going to grow a big collection or not, but I do enjoy watches by how they look and how they can be helpful as well - the Timer function from my Royale and SGW are is my favorite, it can be a great reminder and timekeeping tool in a pinch. Also, if I manage to find weird models at reach - like the rare Technos Alarmdate - I might get them as well.

Hey,

cool collection, looks like, you got a watch for every occasion.

I received my Royale yesterday and i already love it, but it was a little bit confusing to set it.

·

hello, welcome to watchcrunch. love to see different brand from another part of the world 🙏🏻

·

Welcome.

Technos is indeed a brand I had not heard of before. I noticed some vintage technos on ebay. Any tips what to look out for, what to avoid?

Yes you are right! I have one watch for different situations:

Edifice and my two Technos are for special occasions, I use my Edifice on weekends/when I am not working, and the Technos feel more formal;

Royale and SGW are my daily beaters, I change between them according to taste, but SGW is the one I will pick if I need more action, while Royale is my daily companion;

And my A158 is special, although I use it more if I want a lightweight option for a casual setting, this is the first serious purchase I made with my first paycheck. The original one I bought I gave to my mother, so I bought a second-hand model for myself (to show how much I love this watch!), and despite some damages from the previous user, it still rocks like nothing happened.

Take my suggestion with a grain of salt, since I am starting into looking into these watches as well, so it's not a final say on anything.

With the disclaimer up, my suggestion is to look for the vintage models. They are in the market since the 1960s, so loads of interesting models they made have been long discontinued and forgotten - and I say forgotten, because Technos doesn't have a practice around catalogues, so it is hard to track down any info on them, even if you have reference numbers. But this doesn't make their watches bad, just harder to track the history.

I remember some of the well praised models from the pre-Quartz era are those of the Skydiver series:

If you are looking into the most exceptionally rare, this is the holy grail. The series still exist, but now under a Quartz movement (and a completely different design), but the automatic Skydiver seems to be exceptionally difficult to find, I think it was before Technos fully integrated in Brazil and they were still technically a "Swiss" brand, mid to late 70s.

But if you still want to find some nicer models, I suggest you do some hunting around vintage models, since as I said, many great models that were long since discontinued from production.

Depending on the year, you'll find more automatic watches, sometimes the "Incabloc" watches (I think they were water resistant watches) but the main detail will be the brand name: vintage Technos use a Serif font with bold formatting, while nowadays they use a modern-style sans-serif typeface. If you really have luck, you will find the logo in what looks like some sort of sticker or bezel around the letters, those seem to be quite old models.

Models to avoid... Personally, I'd suggest you to avoid modern watches from the cheap range. Not that they are bad, the watches seem decent, but unless you would buy one like a casual customer, they are not that remarkable to look after, or to pay importing fees. Some modern, a bit more expensive watches may look halfway pleasant, but it needs to fit the taste for bold, sharp numbers and big dials. If Quartz aren't your thing, then tough luck, they don't make many automatics nowadays

I have yet to search what they are up to their special series, but I personally think their vintage models look amazing. Definitely worth the search.

Welcome and those Technos are interesting.

Thanks for the kind words.

Funny story about the golden dial Technos: this was actually my grandmother's, but she almost threw it in the trash... Because she didn't want to fix it with a watchmaker 😭 And a brand new model would cost the equivalent to 100 dollars in retail, and this watch is in perfect condition.

She said I could keep it, because she "wouldn't bother taking it to fix anyway". Now I have myself a solid piece for the formal occasions, and I can borrow it to my mother no problem as well. I just need a better strap for it, though, it was a temporary choice, because my grandmother has a tiny wrist and threw away all the adjustment links of the original metal strap...

Anywhere, honestly! They are found in every watch store in Brazil. Anywhere you walk on, there will be a guaranteed section to either Technos, or one of their sub-brands, which include but not limited to Mormaii (sports watches), Condor, and Dumont (fashion-oriented watches).

But a word of caution: since they are more of the "general public" watches, maybe you won't find things too radically distinct, but I think there's a "Technos personality" to the design, so it's not totally soulless, as far as I can tell.

The price range tends to be on the lower end, at least in matters of how much watches can cost, plus the fact they sell in our home country too, yet they are of decent quality, and the designs tend to be tastefully done:

If a "male" design, dials are big and numbers/markers large, but not to the extent of, let's say, X-Games (Orient's Brazilian-centered sports sub-brand), with those ridiculous pizza diameters only a WWE wrestler could pull off;

Or when a "female" design, they tend to be discrete and elegant, and I remember there were some creative watches they released (like the budget version of the Reverso with analog and digital watches, both female and male versions).

And again, there are many nuances, like the fact I am also a beginner and I am no way an expert in Technos watches.

However, my personal recommendation is to also look around for second-hand markets, since there are vintage Technos that are amazing in design, and some rare models back from the pre-Quartz era. If you are particularly adventurous, the vintage Skydiver goes for a sum of money, the modern Skydiver is a decent watch, but has the bootleg Rolex hands and completely different from what the original series look like.

Nice story and great meaning for that piece. My favourite kind of watch is one that has sentimental meaning.
