What should "grail" mean?

Is a grail watch one that you are working toward, or is it more of an unattainable ideal?

I've seen the term used in both ways, and I'm not certain where I stand on this, so I thought I'd ask here.

When I think of my "grails", my mind hovers between goal watches that I could attain with patience, saving, and a long enough time horizon (for me, GS Skyflake or a Big Pilot) and a dream watch that I would certainly love to have, but likely never would own (Lange Zeitwerk Lumen).

What does it mean to you?

It's varied. After evaluation, it's the watch that I can reasonably get and is within reach. That watch is a Christopher Ward C60 Elite 1000

To me a grail watch is the one that you obsess over and feel that you can walk away from this crazy hobby once you obtain it.

I tend to view grails as a long shot, something that could be within reach during my peak earning years 1-2 decades down the road but is closer to a dream than reality. I’m under 30 now and have been into watches for ~8 years now, so maybe that definition will change…

It’s that one watch you always admired and wanted but never could because it’s too pricy or it’s just not available. for me it’s the daytona and the AP royal oak chrono

Good answer, I’m with ya on that. endgame watch is a grail.

A grail could that be watch one wants so bad but realistically is out of reach due to rarity or cost.

For me the grail has to be atleast somewhat attenable or I just completly lose interest in the watch. Im never gonna own a Vacheron Overseas perpetual so why obsses. For me my grail is a Breguet type xxi, cant afford it now but within my grasp.
