What watch(es) started your watch collecting journey?

Funny how everyone has a different but similar start in their watch collecting journey. This quartz Victornox was the last non-premium timepiece of my watch collection before I went to the dark side…

1. Wenger Swiss Army Field (1997, from parents as high school graduation present)

2. Casio G-Shock (2000, birthday present)

3. Guess Quartz (2002, don’t laugh, it was a present from my fiance now my wife)

4. Citizen Eco Drive Calibre Perpetual Calendar (2003, first purchase as a business professional). Still wear this watch today!

5. Citizen Eco Drive Titanium (2004)

6. Victornox Chrono (2006), passed on to my 15 year old son in 2023!

Next purchase was an Omega Seamaster 007 Black Dial (2008) and the story continues…

My parents bought me something approximating this watch when I was a kid. I loved knowing and being responsible for my time. From that point forward I always had a watch on my wrist.

Over the decades I mostly bought watches based only on features. Then a few years ago I bought a Seiko Arnie not only because of its features, but also because of its back-story. That kicked off the disease.

Like many of us Gen X’rs on here, (probably more than would like to admit), for me it was Swatch. The watch below was my first “real” watch in 1986, followed by a Mickey Mouse watch lost to time and an innumerable number of pieces in between.

Three years ago my son got into the hobby and now we have an unhealthy watch obsession that we both feed. Probably need therapy.

As a kid, I was always wearing a calculator watch of some sort, but then as I became a teenager my grandmother bought me a fake Rolex Submariner Bluesie while visiting Mexico and gave it to me as I was entering high school back in the early 2000s. I believe that was pretty much the beginning of my desire to own mechanical watches as an adult. I was also learning to fly during this time in my life, so I was naturally interested in the Breitling Navitimer as they were considered the pilots watch to own. Over the ensuing years I vacillated between hobbies but eventually came back around to horology in 2018 or 2019 when I decided to buy my own Rolex. It was a Yacht-Master 37 that I acquired slightly used from my local Rolex AD. I got a phenomenal deal on it and it reignited my passion for watches. Covid was less than a year later and like many people, I turned to buying watches to escape all the bullshit and I quickly had half a dozen and no where to put them!! Then I start buying boxes, winders, valet trays, stands, watch rolls, microfiber gloves, loupes, UV torches… It’s truly a disease!!!!

Yeah I think I had a Mickey Mouse watch and then a couple of Swatch watches in the 90’s.

A green Swatch (some Olympic Games edition) that I got as a gift. And it was all downhill from there.🤣🤣

I always liked watches, but I didn't really start collecting until I was gifted a Mission to Saturn.
