Workaholic, worked as a shipmaster and now as immigrant in Singapore. My seamanship taught me to love timepieces and they hold a special place next to my actual and metaphorical sextant.
My uncle gave me my first watch. A quartz Lingines Presence with Roman numerals. 36 mm. I was mesmerised by that watch as I was also by my uncle who was a seaman and a world traveler. I don’t have it anymore but I intent to replace it with an automatic to remind me of him. Unfortunately we lost him at a car accident. Not that I need a reminisce of him but I will feel like I am honouring him for his openmindness and generosity.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
A Longines Presence 36mm quartz with Roman numerals.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
My Breitling Airwolf followed me throughout my journey from junior officer all the way to Captain. In hot tropical weather and desert of Egypt to Canadian glazier where our ship was escorted by icebreakers. It is in a bad shape now but it will be always with me as memoirs of a merchant ship Master.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
The watch is the only jewellery that every man regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, work backgrounds can be worn with dignity.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Those that I can not afford.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
Speedy Tuesday. I am magnetised by the cult that it represents. I am also a big Omega fan myself.
