The Joy of Analogue Timekeeping

Indulge me as I preach to the choir for a moment, please.

I own a few digital watches, and have been making an effort to wear these a tad more . The seeming precision of the displays is an allure, though it can be tempting to allow these to sweep one up into the illusion of accuracy suggested by the precise passage of numerals.

But I get more joy from the analogue nature of hands that point at the sweep of a circle. Depending on parallax, the precision is great, and I own watches that are accurate within a couple of seconds, both with and without various connections to atomic time.

“Sweep” is a good word. I enjoy witnessing the passage of time, and the arc sections make anticipating time, or lack thereof, intuitive, comfortable and (to me) obvious.

Hybrid “Amazing” pieces are enjoyable, but there is a sweet spot in my soul for the eternal travel of hands in circuit, going round and round.

Analog displays just give a more accessible sense of time to me. Digital shows time with extreme precision, but you have to mentally fill in the context of what those numbers mean relative to anything. I'm stealing from a video that is surprising hard to find by the Technology Connections guy on YouTube but analog hands are like a pie chart. Progression and relation of time are more instantly recognized.
