Using GMT watch as compass?

Anyone use their gmt watch as a compass?

I’ve read about a couple different methods online / YouTube.

TLDR;

  • Method 1: laid horizontally, the dial will head North if the 24 hour hand is pointed towards the sun
  • Method 2: if the 12 hour hand is pointed at the sun, the 24 hour hand will point North

Thoughts on either method vs compass or if it changes with latitude for recreational use?

 Thanks!

I’ve heard about this, and it does work in the northern hemisphere, though since I never leave civilization (if we can still call it that these days), and have a GPS on me at all times, I’ve never had cause to use my watch as a sundial.

I've used method 2 with my Sinn 105. It works!

I often do the same but often go places where there is no cell service or it’s too cold for phones to work in the elements

Tried both methods out. Method 1 was the closest to iPhone compass north.

Will test both again when I can borrow another phone to take a picture to share.

Using a GMT as a compass is explained at the 4:53 mark of this Crown & Caliber video:  https://youtu.be/3jTaFmy38xM

I’ve actually found this video useful.
