Religion and Watches

Hey Everyone , I started an FB group called Hebrews and Horology for fellow Jews who also love watches to come together and talk watches and share their Yiddishkeit.

I've noticed in a lot of groups either they don't allow watch pics that include religious artifacts (specifically they get worked up about Jewish artifacts) or there are some bad sentiments and hateful anti-Semitic responses (despite a lot of positive responses and fellow Jews joining together in being proud of their Judaism and also love of the watch hobby).

If you are not Jewish but also either love religion, love G-d, respect religious beliefs, and support the Jewish people as a whole, then you are more than welcome to join.

I wish everyone on this group to continued to much success and blessings in all things regarding life, work, healthy, family, and ofcourse in their watch journeys.

You are more than welcome to talk religion and Watches with me in this forum and on this post.

Nice bro. I am not Jewish but that sounds like a nice idea.

As a Christian, I think that you are doing a cool thing and wish you much success.

Interesting stuff.

Tangentially, when we go back far enough, we find that religious faith and timekeeping have the same, shared origins. There’s an interesting literature on the astrotheological roots of religions of all kinds.

The three main monotheistic traditions have Neolithic roots, coterminous with the construction of astronomical, calendrical megaliths (stone clocks, in other words).

Absolutely ! This book talks all about it in the opening chapters. The mitzvah G-d gave the choose was to develop a lunar calendar so we could know when the the new month is, along with our holidays

So much hate in this world is based on stuff that happened centuries -if not millenia- ago. It really should have zero bearing on our current lives.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon), Judaism shares much with our religion; other than the biggest difference, we are very much aligned.

I choose not to use Facebook, but definitely think what you are doing is a good thing.

May God bless you and your family.

As a Buddhist, I'm both non-theistic and totally unbothered by anyone else's religious practices.

If religion does what it says on the tin, it's about turning out better, kinder, happier people. As long as that's both the goal and the practice, you're doing it right. People lose their way when they try to hide hate behind religion.

Absolutely.. Judaism is all about doing Mitzvot (commandments) and Study Torah to create a relationship with G-d make a dwelling place for Him in this material world. Everything has a spark of G-dliness and our job is to reveal those sparks through Torah and a Mitzvot to bring light in to this world.

Were I less a believer, I might have been. 😉

I hope you are still able and comfortable with talking about watches here as well. It is truly terrible that religion divides people when the underling point of most religions I've studied is to unite us. I wish you safety, happiness, and love. Any discrimination should not be tolerated here. Take care.

Can you give us a review? I'm looking for a few good horology books

Can you give us a review? I'm looking for a few good horology books

I am not going to do s full official review of this book. It was a gift and I am happy to have it. Quick pros and cons. Pros: 1. It does a bit of history about the evolution of timekeeping. 2. There are lots great full page pictures of expensive watches. Cons: 1. Unhappy about the lack of text in such a large book, lots of empty space on so many pages. 2. I felt that a high schooler could have compiled better content and that it doesn't seem like a finished product. 3. There is chapter on time travel which I thought was our of place in the 1st place, but then it is only 4 pages one of the pages is a picture and the remaining 3 pages only contains maybe a page and a half of pretty widely known basic time travel information. The entire book has areas of very small writing taking up a small portion of the rest of a blank page. Could have just made the print larger so it was easy to read. So overall I would say if you are interested in buying this book, look at it at the book store or library first.

·

That was a very nice and concise review. Again, thank you.

We celebrate the Hanukkah Bush here. Wife is Jewish and I'm a Catholic. Love thy Nieghbor is all we need.

Peace and enjoy your watch!

Amen! thanks so much! And love the Chanukah bush haha.

Am actually considering conversion to Judaism. Chose Christianity some 30 years ago and the idea of Messianic Judaism appeals to me.

Have been an atheist, Buddhist and Taoist in my youth.

Whatever religion, if any, that someone chooses to follow; as long as they are kind and do for others, that's a win in my opinion.

Our blended family celebrates with a "treenorah" ;)
