Casio GW-5000U-1 - the only ‘God Tier’ G-Shock

Out in London today and reflecting on my choice of timepiece. I reached for the G-Shock GW-5000U-1 this morning because, honestly, I don’t want to get mugged. But then I thought - does my love for the GW-5000U-1 extend to any other Casio or G-Shock watches? Should I, urged on my shouty YouTube influencers, think everything by Casio is ‘God Tier’? The answer is absolutely not. At best Casios hold some youthful nostalgia. I remember admiring them in the Argos catalogs of the 70s and 80s. Would I buy one now? No. For me, most G-Shocks are ugly (some very much so) with confusing functionality and poor build quality. Or at the top end, they’re massively overpriced. The GW-5000U-1 is the exception. Am I wrong?

I mean…

I personally have the king and the oak and I’m happy with the them all around. So for what I have experienced in going to respectfully disagree and as far an over priced model I feel ever company has at least 1 or 2 of those but it’s there choice to price them at what ever but we don’t have to buy them.

Understood. I’m being deliberately provocative, of course. I have purchased many Casios over the years but I’ve sold or given most of them away after 6 months to a year. The GW-5000U-1 has been the exception which is why its my only 'God Tier' G-Shock.

I guess that for me the best square G-Shock will always be the DW-5600E and its derivatives, such as the GW-M5610U that I also own, which in my eyes is the best because it retained the color scheme of the original 1983 G-Shock.

Yes and no. The protection bars give You extra credit .There are many gshock god tier. It is a question of taste after all. To me nothing beats 6900 ( the huge mass of it and position of huge light button). I had the normal one decades ago and the metal negative display now. I would get the casioak all gold metal. So very different to your god tier. Enjoy.

Agree that the 80s nostalgia vibes are strong with GW-M5610U.

👍 on the protection bars.

6900? Tried them on a number of times but never pulled the trigger. Too big for me and the John Mayer / Hodinkee hype around that model also put me off.

I get all of that, but for me only the GW-5000U-1 delivers on those benefits to a satisfactory level. The higher quality resin used and screw-in back sets it apart imo. I’ve owned the GW-M5610U-1ER which looks cool but found the lower quality resin used uncomfortable. The more expensive GW-S5600U-1JF looks the part but is even more uncomfortable than the GW-M5610U-1ER! I don’t like the look of non-square G-Shocks - too big, thick, clunky, with many sub-optimal design choices being made. So, to get back to my original point, there are some good G-Shocks, even one or two great ones, but I don’t think that qualifies Casio as a ‘god-tier’ vendor. They build affordable, durable but ultimately disposable plastic watches.
