Assuming no monetary value for selling on, if this is to add to my collection then I'd go for one watch, if it's in place of my collection I'd have to go for 10, I couldn't have just one.
10k for two or three & I'd be happy, but wouldn't want 10 X £1000 watches, but wouldn't want something stupid expensive either (& most mega money watches don't appeal aesthetically as they're usually ridonkulous...)
My grail watch (Vianney Halter La Resonance) would require an unlimited budget, but be rather impractical as a one watch collection. With $10,000 I'd keep the three automatic watches in my current collection (equivalent to about $1,500) and find a few great companions for them from brands that are out of my league so far, including Orient Star's most expensive skeleton model to scratch that 39mm open-worked itch.

I would use the 'unlimited budget' to purchase some ridiculous overhyped, overpriced watch and then immediately flip it.
Then I would use the proceeds from the sale to buy a lovely 10 watch collection.

1 watch isn't a collection.
Depends if I have to keep the watch/watches.
But as of right now I'd go with the unlimited budget. Buy a Philippe Dufour Simplicity or an Akrivia or Ferdinand Berthoud watch.

I could probably stretch the $10000 budget even further and get more than 10 watches!
