It’s been a minute. - dNG Design Journal Ch. 9

Hi! If you’re new here, I like to sketch new watch designs for fun. Some work, some don’t, all of them are unrealistic. Tell me what you think regardless!

Damn, it’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these, hasn’t it? Not like a lot of people see the post when it comes up, anyways - I’m always posting on Aussie time, so there’s nobody to blame really. Maybe I should get a Caller GMT watch soon.

I recently got inspired again by this book I was reading in my local library - A Century of Colour in Design. I’m not that savvy on colour theory, but some of the designs that were in this book are really intriguing. I recommend you guys take a look when you can!

Part 1: Travelman

Speaking of GMTs, I’ve created a brand new GMT watch design, lovingly titled “Travelman:”

Image

I really enjoy how robust and sporty this rendition looks. I’d imagine it would be suitable for everyday wear, if it isn’t already rocking some kind of heavy water resistance rating. I based much of the case profile on the (TAG) Heuer Super Professional, but with the lugs and hands of the Norqain Freedom 60 GMT & Tudor Black Bay GMT. You may also be asking yourself, “why is the dial so empty? No applied indices?” That’s a really good question. Maybe it was a design choice. Maybe I’m too lazy to draw rectangles. You’ll never know.

Part 2: Winker

This next design wasn’t really based off of anything, but I thought a rectangular watch with a small seconds subdial would look really goofy and fun. I call it “Winker” because the nameplate at 3 and the small seconds at 9 gives the impression that the watch is winking at you.

Image

Gun-to-my-head, I guess the small second subdial on the Winker would be akin to the enlarged ones you would see on a Longines Big Eye or a Studio Underd0g Chrono. I love how esoteric and goofy the design of the Winker is, and I’d love to see something like it in circulation someday.

Image

Part 3: Visioneer & Triquetra

Now for these last two, which I’m still trying to get my head around. First is the “Visioneer:”

I titled it this way because the detailing around the square subdials reminds me of a pair of glasses. It also does not have a running seconds hand, so it’s a true chrono watch through and through.

Image

This last one has been a massive headache for me to redesign- the “Triquetra,” because I really don’t want to name it “Fidget Spinner:”

Image

A 12o’clock mounted tourbillon will accompany a date pointer at the 4 and a power reserve indicator at the 8. I have no clue how to even draw a tourbillon, nor the rest of this other stuff, so this will be a challenge until the end of the year.

Come June, I will begin to transpose all of my previously hand-drawn designs into digital form, so I would love to see you guys there! Prepare for the return of the Targeteer, Clock Tower, and a never-before-seen one, the Hypnotist! -M

They're brilliant, really good. The winker is the one that really gets me, I can just see the 70s in that, really really interesting, love it. Honestly keep up the good work, I approve and if i we're a brand owner I'd be knocking on your door. And I think that's a stricko's seal of approval 👍👍👍👍

Excellent designs, I'd love to see more. You should post more or start a blog or insta just for these, you're really good at it. You'd never know what might come of it

That's a great book, can't go wrong with anything arty that comes from Thames & Hudson.

I like the Winker design. I love my Moels for many reasons, one of which is the off-centre design. This is similarly off balance which makes it cool in my eyes.

I’ve been considering starting a youtube channel where i document original designs & maybe re-design other brands’ watches, but I have no idea how to do graphic design or edit videos! 🥺 I’m sure I’ll have time to learn soon, I hope!

That’s so sweet of you - thanks so much! I’m no Gerald Genta, but I hope my designs can inspire others to do the same. 😁
