well. Thats the thing. No language writes Chronometers without the H
Portuguese, Catalan, and Spanish all use cronometre, but it is a conjugated verb meaning time.

I doubt it is the case. the TRE at the end is correct for French, but it would still be CHRONOMETRE.
It could be a typo, after all the original Bulova Lunar Pilot prototype had one too.
"Le Cronometre de Monsieur Feuillet" (1700) and more. This way to write the word existed in French. Would be interesting to know, if Rolex wrote it like that at the time and why they might have chosen this spelling.
As far as I understand it, a "cronometre" was not for measuring time, but for coordinating movements of people, to synchronize them e.g. in dancing, marching ... working, whilst a chronometer is an instrument to measure time.
It probably a radial, look at the R & the X on the word Rolex. Not sure of the correct word but the horizontal lines on the bottom of the R & on the top & bottom of the X are not consistent. Surely it wouldn't leave the Rolex factory like this!!
