Feynman Fjord

Just received this today! I got this on pre-order as a graduation present to myself and have been waiting about 6 months. Feynman has such a unique aesthetic that I am really attracted to. Reference: FT003. It features an ETA 2895 movement, domed sapphire crystal, and internal rotating bezel compass. I will actually use the compass, as my kids and I have been doing a lot of "homemade" astronomy and horology projects like building an inclinometer, making a rudimentary sundial, and calculating our apartments latitude and longitude. (Based on GPS, we were within 1 mile radius using my watch and our sketchy homemade products. haha)

Anyway, my terrible photos do not do this justice. The lume is insane. The dial has a subtle sunburst effect that I couldn't manage to show in the photos. It looks a lot different in the sun vs indoors. The watch and zulu strap feel great on the wrist although the strap is a bit chunky for my current taste. I will likely try some other straps at some point. The photo makes it look bigger on my wrist, but it actually wears really nicely and doesn't look oversized.

My favorite thing about this watch (that I forgot to mention in the post) is the lack of branding on the dial. I hate feeling like a walking advertisement.

Wow!  That is awesome!  How did you even hear about them?

Spending WAAAAYYY too much time watching reviews on YouTube. I was really into the Ming watches and some reviewers cited this company as sort of an affordable alternative to the Ming aesthetic. Once I checked their website it was love at first sight.

Wow this is a mind blowing watch!!!

One of the coolest, most interesting micro-brands.

I wonder if the company name is a tip to everyone's favourite theoretical physicist, Richard Feynman.

I really dig that sandwich dial.

I was assuming that it had a physics theme as well… is there some atomic pattern or the like on the case back?

Agreed! It's such a pleasure to wear. It's like looking at a piece of art each glance that you check the time.

Not sure about the Feynman (physicist) connection. The portion of their website entitled "about" doesn't mention it directly, although their aesthetic could certainly fit. The sandwich dial is a game changer for me. It is really pleasant to look at a watch that has a strong 3-D aspect to it rather than a 2-D like most of my other watches. I never really thought about it until getting this one. Although there are other brands who accomplish this effect without a sandwich dial, this one is really nice.

Here is a pic of the case back:

Yes, I love a 3D dial.  Several of the currently in vogue Grand Seiko have beautifully textured and coloured dials.  I wish more watchmakers took advantage of the interesting 3D opportunities the sandwich dial provides.

Panerai uses it on several of their otherwise somewhat (imho) unattractive and excessively large pieces.

Here's a great looking Hamilton, although it looks oversized in this photo, it's a very reasonable 38mm apparently.

One of my favourite micro brands: ochs und junior, with an elegant unbranded dial.  This is an interesting variation on the sandwich theme - more of an extended series of date windows.  The ochs und junior provide interesting size, material and colour options on several of their gorgeous pieces.

I don't have any sannny-dialed watches, yet, but I'll definitely add that awesome Feynman to my wish-list.

😊

Thanks for sharing these! That Ochs und Junior is amazing.

The owner named the brand after his son! I have their first model and love the layered dial. Specially how the seconds hand dips under the hour track 😎👍🏼

Yup, another one for the "someday maybe" box.  😉
