Bob Marley watches

Most people know that I'm a huge Bob Marley fan, possibly because I wear or carry something themed with "Rasta" colours all the time, but also because I've made it known quite publicly before.

The one thing I've never managed to find though is a good Bob Marley watch.

Image

Starting at the bottom, there are a ton of cheap Chinese watches with Bob Marley on the dials usually cased in the same alloy as my cat with orange glasses watch. They are okay, I suppose, but I think they could do better.

Image

Some of them are extremely difficult to read the time from too, which somewhat negates their usefulness.

Image

And some are too big to be practical except as a fashion piece which will certainly get unwanted attention.

Image

Even the Casio G-Shock in Rasta colours is huge.

Image

The other alternative is to just buy a printed strap, but then there are Marley watches which should be the official thing, right?

Image

Sadly, Marley watches are low-quality, overpriced (but often found in bargain bins), and have nothing much to do with Bob Marley apart from being part of the many cashgrabs created by his offspring and their offspring. I've fallen foul of their "House of Marley" headphones before now, and their watches are similarly functional but uninspiring.

Image

Really, the only decent Bob Marley watch is the official commemorative Tango from Raymond Weil, but I've already given my thoughts about that on another site. Suffice it to say that I wasn't exactly enamoured by the initial price and how quickly it halved when it reached the grey market.

Image

The irony, of course, is that Bob Marley never actually wore a watch other than a cheap mechanical Timex in one blurry photograph taken when he was a teenager. There was no Rolex or other "Babylon things" for Bob.

With a new movie due to be released on February 14th this year, it'll be interesting to see if there is any product placement of a watch on Kingsley Ben-Adir's wrist or if he plays the part watchless as he should.

For me, however, my search for a decent Bob Marley tribute watch will continue.

I was going to say maybe get a watch that he onced owned would also pay a good tribut but a quick google search on my end came up with this 😳

”Truth be told, he very rarely wore a watch in any kind of public appearance having sworn off “Babylonian things” as part of his Rastafarian faith”

So maybe wearing no watch in the only way to pay tribute? 👀

Yes, that's from my article, of course. But since I'm not Bob, I could never not wear a watch. 😢

I have the Raymond Weil Bob Marley and I get what you’re saying about secondary market. Overall is an awesome piece though

I remember, and this was about 5 years ago, that it started out at around £1500 for early adopters then turned up on Jura and Jomashop for around £600 within weeks. Secondhand, there are a lot of them about for half of that again now.

I’ve got a Tango too.

Definitely going. And whether it's good or bad, I'll be buying the DVD for my collection.

Yeah, pity about Dobbin... but you never know what you will find on Etsy. 😉

I’m here for the interest! Great post.

How about as I’m into modding this idea……….

Buying a decent watch built around an NH38 on Aliexpress then dismantle it and get an image of the great "tuff gong" placed on it and then re-assemble there’ll only be one like it Dean 👍🏻

I don't know for sure, but I think Bob had a Timex Marlin as a teenager until just before his band took off. Whatever the case, he stopped wearing watches and never expressed any interest in them.

I'll just have to stick to my rasta nato.
