What is a watch release really?

When a watch is announced/released what exactly does that mean for availability of that watch?

Is there a difference between an announcement and a release?

Do we need a new term for watches that are released but not widely available? Is this what an announcement amounts to?

This post is inspired by the past two years of Christopher Ward and Tudor releases, uh announcements or whatever.

This varies from brand to brand. For Tudor, it usually means available today at your local AD. For others it may be available for pre-order. For most brands, it is usually an announcement followed by a window for ordering. It could mean a limited window of time or quantity for ordering.

I think getting a list of interested clients helps the brands allocate numbers to countries/regions down to the specific stores as well. May help them estimate what kind of a production run they need (assuming they don’t make them all prior to this).
