Watchbox Mock-Up Thoughts

A buddy of mine caught a glimpse of my toolbox/watch box and told me he had something similar he's been looking to get rid of. Apparently he was gifted this box from someone in his family, but wasn't a fan of the build. I told him I'd happily take it off his hands - give me a fun project and potential gift to my brother.

Taking a little inspiration from other boxes out there, for this project I wanted to have a tray that can be removed from the top. I like this idea so you could actually pull your collection out and set it on a table. One drawback is this limits the tray to holding only 12 watches (but should be enough) - so thought using the smaller spots to hold pens or glasses might be nice.

The question for you all is in regards to the drawers. This one doesn't have as many but my plan is to have all the smaller ones fitted as strap organizers - there are 6 in total, each holding 6 straps for a total of 36. Is this overkill? Should I leave a pair open for other things?

I am also lost on what to do with 2 larger drawers if anything at all. I was just thinking of leaving them completely open to throw random items into. Right now, my box has only one of these larger drawers so contains just some random watch tools I've collected, and some useful items I occasionally use to photograph my watches with. Any ideas of what could be done in there that would actually be cool/useful?

As mentioned at the top, I had been planning to give this to my brother for his birthday but in chatting with him recently he shared that he is super happy with what he is currently using. I plan to send him some photos of the finished product in case he changes his mind, but if he doesn't I'll be looking to get rid of this. I was wondering if there are any locals to Seattle that would be interested in buying something like this? I know if I keep it, it'd be an excuse to buy more watches, haha.

Yep, I use this software at my job - easy for me to dump it in here and make sure things were looking right. 👍

Dude, I would buy it from you in a heartbeat!!! Put me on the reservation / allocation list!!!

And this better not be like a Rolex waitlist!!!

Okay, so just to be clear, I’m #1 on the waitlist, right after your buddy, yeah? If he says no, it’s mine, right?

Yeah, think I’d like one, too.

Go ahead and put me on the “expression of interest” list.

You’re #1 right after my brother 😂

The larger drawer(s) can be used for strap tools, bracelets, springbars, microfiber cloth etc. 👍

·

Yeah, it’s not the nicest chest out there but does the job. It’s no more secure than a Wolf watchbox - you’re right that the locks are just for show. I think the benefit is just keeping all the watch related stuff organized. 👍

I was looking to get something like this myself!

I was never an accessories guy, and I always had only 1-2 watches, and I kept my sunglasses in my EDC bag, but since I got married some things changed and now I'm seriously thinking of one of these.

Seems clean and functional, straps drawers are actually on point. I would leave some empty drawers with no organisers to keep the watchmaking tools (and some other small tools) and accessories. But looks really great, not bothering my OCD, but actually doing the opposite)

Are you designing this for your brand or just as a one off? This is a really cool idea. How will you have it made?

I have the Harbor Freight box, and while I’m not a carpenter, I have had thoughts on what to do with it.

I would think 3 small drawers (one side) with 6 straps each would be plenty. On the other side, I would keep one drawer for simple tools and convert the bottom two into a deeper single drawer for larger tools or a time grapher.

For the bottom two drawers, they could be converted into a single drawer that could hold another 12 watches.

Also, depending on the size of your pillows, you could likely do 18 watches in the top.

If you put me on the list do I have e to buy jewelry first.

Needs to have compartments for 40 watches.

Yeah, I think I’ll save a pair of the smaller drawers for tools. One large bottom drawer for watches is cool. I don’t think I’ll be doing that level of modification though.

My pillows are on the larger side but if I didn’t want to add a tray and just built the organization right into the box I think I could squeeze out another row. 18 is overkill I think for my brother, haha.

You need a dedicated piece of furniture for that man watches, 😂

This is a one off. The tool box was free, so am simply modding/cleaning it up. New felt across the board, adding the watch tray with matching watch cushions, adding organization to the drawers, and a little paint. Not too different from my current box (though I started with a nicer toolbox), though trying some new things here with the removable tray.
