Serica 4512 Announcement Tomorrow

Serica is teasing a new dial variant for their 4512 to be announced tomorrow. Based on the promotions (white dial (?) and promotions taking place in a casio), my guess is a tuxedo. In the mean time here's a quick reflection on five months with my California.

Short story: It's great and way better than it has any business being.

Longer story: This is my first independent/micro and has been my daily for the past five months. Great buying experience with Jerome, the founder.

The pros: The case is gorgeous with its vertical brushing on the bezel reminiscent of the 5711 but at 1/200th the cost. Both the black lacquer dial and handset are really well executed. Swiss made clone of a clone of the ETA 2801 is buttery smooth. The Bonklip bracelet is the most comfortable and flexible I've ever owned. (Lovely Hodinkee strap on it in the photo.)

The cons: It could use a bit more lume (though happy to have a vintage inspired field watch without a vintage inspired patina). Hand winding with a screw down crown is a minor inconvenience but an everyday inconvenience.

Looking forward to what they do next.

Love it man, and I had a very similar experience. My 4512 Cali dial has been serving gym duty regularly on an uncle seiko rubber waffle strap.

I can’t wait to see the new variation tomorrow, and really can’t wait to see what new models they eventually come out with.

Wow looks great! Very cool to see it on the black waffle strap, reminds me of the Aquanaut (not that Patek needs to be the basis of comparison). I have a blue Uncle Seiko waffle on my SKX013 and thinking it might need to move...

Love the look of these so much, would buy one except screw-down crown on a manual watch?  What were they thinking?

Tuxedo it is!

I have a 4512 California and love the look of this new one!

The only thing that I wished they'd do on the California is reduce or remove the minute track. Really shrinks the dial on a 38mm watch.

That's a really great point. The minute track on the Commando variant is ideal IMO. It's a weird mix where the 4512 wears bigger than 37.7mm but the Cali dial appears much smaller.

UPDATE: Got the Uncle Seiko waffle strap in black, and it hasn't left my wrist in months. Honestly wears and looks better than watches 10x the price.
