Opinion on Stührling?

So a friend of mine showed me his watches and he was very proud of this Stühling skeletonised dress watch that he got from a "wealthy friend" and i couldn't not bash it...

First thing that stood out was just the cheap finishing of the case and leather strap, then the fact that it said "swiss" all over but not "swiss made". To my knowledge "swiss" doesnt mean anything.

Also it was just a cheap miyota movement.

I then look at their website and there you can see around 225 mens watches, many of them straight hommages of rolex or bauhaus german brands, like we see from the likes of pagani and san martin, heavy discounts and an "about us" story without any substance.

Then they have some quotes from obscure non watch or fashion publications about the quality of their products

They usually dont bother to mention what movement a watch comes with but dont shy away from using words like "swagger" and "quality engenerring" "powerful statement " and "precision timekeeping"

Just seems like your old vincero or mvmt business model.

The brand probably has nothing to do with germany, as the name implies?

I've got one and think it is about right for the price. I'm pretty sure they do the Invicta gag, claiming to be marked down from a stratospheric imaginary MSRP. Similarly dicey is the claim that the owner or founder or whoever's great grandpappy was a master watchmaker of whom perhaps one tiny grainy photo and no real supporting documentation exists.

I think they scrubbed that nonsense from their website, but the tale of the anonymous genius is here.

My recollection is that Robert Farago, who has a bit of a journalism background, tried contacting for verification and got no response.

I own two of their pieces, a Meridian GMT and an Aeronaut Flieger with a pretty cool complication. Both are quartz, both are pretty well made, fittings and finish are just fine and both hitting approximately the $100 mark. I like them for what they are and I happily have them among my fleet.

I have seem some of their skeleton pieces and they want upwards of $1,200 or more, I'm just not interested in those at all, especially at that price point.

I bought a few in my naivete in my early days of collecting. They are a poor man's Invicta. (Joking haha). I bought a grand complication quartz because it made sense. Who wants to keep winding that thing?

IMHO, they are adequate for the price ~$100. I wouldn't venture beyond that as others have said.

Frequently seen on the QVC shopping channel here which probably says it all. The over the top sales bumf they come out with would make a snake oil sales man cringe

Chill bro, I'm just saying it feels like a cash grab for people who don't know/care about watches. They just want a watch that they like the look of, preferably siwss/german for an affordable price.

Stührling do false advertisement, the "Swiss" branding, the exaggerated sales, cheap movements (btw i have nothing against quarz, i have some an plan on getting more), the name that sounds swiss/german. The made up story about the origins/owner of the brand. Just shady and dishonest business practices.

And of course nearly everything is made in China, my beloved lorier watch is surely made in China, but doest pretend to be a Swiss luxury piece, the brand is open about where they take inspiration (here comes the picasso quote you mentioned) etc... wear whatever makes you happy!✌️
