We have all been through this. As someone entering the world of watches, it is hard not to come across a Longines. I remember when I just begun, it felt absurd forking out thousands of dollars just for a watch. So I got to admit, what first drew me to Longines was definitely not its history, design or quality. Yes, it was the price, and I am not ashamed to admit it.

If there was anything the price point did, it was to sink me deeper into the world of watch collecting. I was looking for an affordable diver watch then, and the crazy looks of the Hydro Conquest blown me over. There were many things done right for this model. The beautifully colored dials, different case sizes and they even come in rubber straps which made the watch 'sextra' sporty!

There were many times I took the watch out from its box just to caress it in the palm of my hands while I adore every little detail of it. Every nook and cranny I search, I found nothing but quality and attention to detail. However, the most important thing I found, was their sincerity in watch making.

The finishing of the time piece could rival more expensive brands out there, and they are not blowing their own horn about it. Longines is just quietly sitting at their corner, dedicating themselves to making great watches. They have a 190 year history and there is nothing left to prove.

If you are sitting on the fence on a Longines, you need to come down, take out your wallet and bring that baby home. I have seen shops displaying their watches like they are on some kind of a cheap sale.

Please, Longines watches should be placed on a pedestal and worshipped. They are the ones who taught me to look beyond the brand or price of a watch, and find what I truly love.

Longines, Entry level brand, Top level happiness.

The longines brand has alot of nice dress watches.  Their tool watches have a lot of graphical oddities with its dials that designers and technical people would point out.

With the watch you have shown:

  1.  Date window is on the small side in reference to the numbers.
  2.  The 12 is too may numbers for that space.  That is why designers choose a shape or move the number in versus moving it into the chapter ring.
  3.  Having the 12 and 6 move into chapter ring is odd.
  4.  For a watch so busy on the outside, the inner four quadrants create trapzoid spaces. Non interesting spaces that trap the eyes.
  5.  The hands are unbalanced plates of metal. Either the take the back portion off the hour and minutes, have larger lume fill in the hour hand.  Make the seconds hand a different color.

LONGINES SPIRIT PRESTIGE EDITION Watch L3.811.4.53.9 | Longines®

In the zulu/spirit time, the stars balance out the longines logo. No quadrant problem. Much better hands design.   In the zulu however the date wheel restricted by the movement design is slightly higher than the radial of the numbers. Or they cut the number three off, with the date window on the spirit.  These are supposed flagship watches of the brand.  What the hell goes on in their design office?  Any industrial design student by third year would not be making these 'mistakes'.

It is these frustrating design details that longines allows that keeps them down as a brand.

omg, those u mentioned just made so much sense! u mentioned a key word balance, something the mind sees but the eyes keep quiet about it. very provoking perspectives! as a watch beginner, you have helped me to appreciate watches better, i am thankful! I am sure i will examine them differently the next time! I do sense a few oddities in the hydro conquest myself too, but i know there isnt a perfect watch per se, thanks once again for pointing them out!

your questions really gotten me thinking! i was earlier looking at the spirit models and I so dyingly wanted to see the '3' on the dial. However the 40m one didnt have it due to the date window and i need to choose the 42mm one just to settle for the half cut '3' and a case size too big for my wrist.

I really loved the numeral 3 as it looks interestingly cute to me due to its curves. haha. I believe longines later updated the spirit with the date window shifted to the 6 position. I believe this made the dial more symmetrical and balanced. As much as i appreciate a date window, I feel true beauty lies in the version without the date window where all numerals are visible. absolutely beautiful!

Super watches and it was a hydroconquest that got me started as well.

Think the Hydroconquest is very under appreciated, it and the Rado Captain Cook.

that is quite true, often overlooked! Captain cook has a very itneresting bezel!

·

spot on, they nailed it eventually!

I would agree.  But then why not get a larger movement or adjusted the date wheel size for the bigger model?  It is painfully obvious they didn't want to go through that effort.  I would not care as much if they did not want to charge $3 000.  These are issues I see more with microbrands due to scale and cost runs.

Thankyou, must admitvthat bit of red certainly adds something, a thing the newer versions haven't got which is a shame.
