Seiko Saturday

Hello fellow crunchers, this is my first post. I have been on here for a few months now and started to feel quite selfish enjoying all of your watches without sharing any of my own. I have been collecting for about a year and a half now and definitely bought too many in 2023. This is my King Seiko Vanac 5256-6000. It is one of my favorite purchases from last year. I went down the vintage rabbit hole and knew I had to buy one (or two) of these as soon as I saw the faceted crystals that this line has. It's hard to show off the effect this crystal gives without holding it in person. I tried to show how many angles it has with the lights from my PC in the second picture. All of those angles really change how the blue sunburst dial looks depending on how much light is going through it. I mainly chose this one because I loved the speckles that are covering the dial and how they reflect light as well. I hope everyone here can find a unique watch they weren't expecting or that they didn't know existed in 2024 and add it to their collections.

Wow, beautiful. Enjoy it!

Has a classic 70s vibe. Love it! I haven't really searched for faceted watches but picked up this Timex that has that feature recently. I may have to do some research!

Yes very 70s! Some of the Seikos have the same shape that your Timex has. From the research I've done they come in all sorts of shapes. One of the Seikos that I couldn't find any clean examples to buy had an octagon instead of a square/rectangle.

I think I got lucky with how clean the crystal is. I'm assuming it's not original and was replaced at some point because there is not a single scratch on it.

The other thing is photos don't do them justice.

Exactly, I thought it was even cooler once it was delivered.

That’s just stunning man

Love the Vanac line, they definitely don’t make them like that anymore 😎

It's such a sick line. I had to stop looking at them because I think I would have kept buying more. That ad is awesome.

That piece is mesmerizing. I like that Seiko has tapped into their old designs with the latest releases. Would be thrilled to see this come out with modern materials etc. An absolute stunner though!

Agreed. I would buy a reissue of this watch in a second.

Wow I love that! I’m a classic white dial vintage KS owner myself 😂 it’s good to see someone appreciate the other parts of their catalogue!

·

That’s a beaut! Have always been looking to add a Vanac to the collection but haven’t pulled the trigger yet! Maybe 2024 is the year! 🤣

Ive been eyeing one with a white/silver dial on eBay for a few weeks now but keep telling myself I don't need another one 😂

Do it! When you see one that looks to be in good condition in the color you like go for it.

I’m super happy for you! Great find! 🌈

Absolutely stellar with that prism crystal! That is a conversation starter for sure (and might even draw in some diehard Seiko collectors)

I've been slowly specializing in odd repair work like restoring prism crystals. I had a guy approach me once at an event thinking I was wearing a Seiko Vanac. Some of the vintage Actus lines also carried Vanac-style cases and crystals.

Had no idea that KS had faceted crystals! Your second pic is killer

❤️Looks like a party is going down on your wrist, and i want to dance 🕺 beautiful piece my friend 👌

I saw one a little while ago in decent condition and price and bookmarked it, but when I went back it was already sold 😓Waited too long haha! Need to pull the trigger quicker!

Just out of curiosity, where did you source yours?

That Seiko looks clean. What do you use on the crystal when it looks like that?

I took the gamble on eBay. Seller had loads of good reviews. I've bought 3 watches off eBay now and this one was definitely in the best condition. Only thing that I may need to look in at some point is I'm guessing the movement really needs a clean. The rotor doesn't feel like it is freely spinning anymore and the crown feels like it is a similar state when I'm trying to adjust the say and date.

Hi-grade Japanese whetstones. I've seen crystal work done on the polishing wheels and they just look like gummy candy losing every edge

Good to know. Do you do other restoration work? I have another vintage Seiko and the logo is somewhat messed up looking, is that something I can replace? Or potentially adjust? I haven't found too much when searching about it online.

You can check my WC profile for more restoration work. Haven't done a logo re-adjustment before, I feel like that'll depend on how severe the logo is if it can still be salvaged. Highly advise leaving the work to a specialist that focuses on delicate restoration work.
