The literal GOAT of all watches

Peeps, I had a thought about what objectively and subjectively is the most important and beautiful watch in the world, ever?

I came to a moment of enlightenment when i realized it was the F-91W. The design and functionality are truly world-shifting. It mass-introduced the idea that a watch can be used as a timer, alarm, and a time-keeper.

It was cheap and accessible to all walks of life, no matter how poor. It has been owned by every household at every generation.

And the design is such that it does not look out of place on a labourer to a CEO, men, women, sportsmen, academics - it is truly THE ubiquitous watch.

And it's so damn nostalgic too. That beep, and the illuminator. Just brings you back.

True beauty.

I disagree, especially about the backlight. It's barely usable in any situation.

In my personal opinion, it's not worthy of the hype bestowed upon it.

It's a cheap entry level watch for teenagers that holds nostalgia with most of us because for most of us, it was the first watch.

I'm sure I'll get plenty of comments telling me that I'm wrong, but I'm a big boy and I can take it.

The F-91W is just hipster chic.

It’s a nothing-watch from an horological perspective. It was just yet-another black resin digital watch from Casio. It wasn’t the first; it didn’t have any ground-breaking functionality or features; it didn’t establish any design trends. At least the Casio DW-5000 has the provenance of being the first G-Shock; and that pre-dates the F-91W by 7 years!

The only claims to fame for the F-91W seem to be 1) they made a lot of them, and 2) they were favoured by terrorists (according to the Wikipedia page)

I can’t see why anyone would get all dewy-eyed over such an irrelevant watch.

But 'insert YouTube Influencer name here' say it's a God tier watch ;-)

Me and my wife have one each.

We bought another for our 12 y/o son, it's his daily driver.

What do Terrorists and Basic Training Recruits have in common?

The F-91W 😆

It’s cool that there people who like this watch, but nah. Even when this watch was new (‘89?) it was unremarkable. I can only remember my peers (none of whom were into watches) talking about two watches in the late 80s/early 90s- Swatches and G-Shocks. I remember people wearing the F-91W, but that’s like saying I remember people wearing the Nike Cortez.*

*ick.

There was an arrogant young sales clerk at a luxury boutique in Paris the last time my wife and I were there who insisted that he would not trade his Casio straight up for the Santos 100 on my wrist. Nice to know because I had no intention of doing that deal. He was a French hipster dressed in a cheap navy wool suit obviously ordered by his employers.

I agree with the other's take. I don't see the reverence for that watch. The f-91 is too small, and has a back light that is completely useless. There are so many better Casios out there.
